Convert to WMA
« on: April 11, 2003, 09:55:47 pm »

I am Running Media Center 9.0.141 and Windows Media Player 9.00.00.2980.  I ripped a bunch of CD's in uncompressed WAV and now want to convert them to WMA.  But I get a "Failed to convert" error.  I was able to convert them to APE and MPC.  Just for kicks I just tried to convert MP3's to WMA and it is working.  Is there a problem specifically converting from WAV to WMA?

I am pretty sure I also had problems ripping to WMA in Media Center.

Any Ideas?

You may need to visit our plug-ins page to get the encoder.

Also, update to 9.0.148, available in the first thread on this board.

WM support has been a problem for us the last few  months.  Microsoft didn't release the SDK until a couple months after they released the player, and then they changed the interface.  We're either there or close to being there now.

Why'd you want WMA?
There are a LOT of better formats out there without ANY DRM built into them.

The less people use formats with DRM the more the industry is going to realise we not gonna put up with anything they throw at us. They have rights sure but so do we :)

Thank you for the suggestions.  I did update to 9.0.148 and confirmed that I had the WMA encoder installed.  I still get the error "Failed encoding".  It is almost instant.  It does not seem to even do the decoding from the original format.

Furthermore, I can convert from formats other than WAV to WMA.  The problem seems to be with the interaction between WAV and WMA..

Ok.  Here's what's happening now.......

If I try to convert, when the conversion of each song starts, I get three subsequent little pop-up windows that go 1, 2, 3,and then the conversion works.  I have to manually acknowledge each one before the other one appears, or the encoding starts after the third one.  So much for unattended conversion.  What can I do?
