JRemote2: "cache download ahead"?
« on: May 17, 2020, 04:21:54 pm »

I recently purchased JRemote2, and am pleased I can now stream losslessly to my phone(/car). However, it does not have a "cache download ahead" option as Gizmo has, and so when I drive through remote parkland (with no network signal), the player stops abruptly, and needs to be manually resumed when back in networked territory. In Gizmo, I could set the cache to "10 tracks" and play continuously through the park. Does JRemote2 not have this feature? It would be a very useful feature.

Also, a suggestion: I, for one, organize my within-artist albums by release date ("date" in MC). Any possibility of adding this option to JRemote2?

Oh yes!
I enjoyed that feature of Gizmo on many business flights over the last years.

Would love to see that feature again in JR2!

Hello,

I have wanted this feature also for the past few years and on iOS Gizmo is not an option at all. Are there any updates regarding this function? I consider this an essential feature and I would love some ETA on it.

Merry Christmas!

Unfortunately it seems there is no priority at all on the mobile app although Mobile gets more and more important.

Just yesterday I thought about this feature again, when I was travelling home from Christmas visits by train. We went through a lot of tunnels - JRemote unusuable.

Same with subtitles. If you have a srt-file in the folders, the subtitles cannot be switched off or on, on your Mobile.

It is really a pity that JRiver does not care about JRemote.

You're kidding, right?

The download cache feature has been asked about before, and I believe Hendrik has mentioned that there's currently no plans on adding it. If I recall correctly it's not an easy thing to implement so chances are, at least for the time being, it's going to be a Gizmo-only feature.

As you confirm - they have no plans to further develop JRemote.

In 2020/21.

Uhhhh? JRemote for iOS is still in active development, Bob has a beta version being tested right now by a handful of testers. He's also said he's going to be working on the remaining UI when the new year starts.

JRemote for Android was discontinued and replaced with JRemote2 for Android, which was a rewrite of the app from the ground up with many new features and an update that was released not too long ago. Hendrik is the one actively developing it.

Hardly "no plans to further develop JRemote".

Yes Awesome Donkey, I am talking about jRemote2.

And why there is a development for a device, which has 28% worldwide market share, compared to 71% of Android, I also donīt understand. Shouldnīt there by a priority on an operating system, which is clear market leader = Android? But anyway...

I, as a really long year, loyal user of JRiver can just give my feedback back to the team of JRiver, based on my experiences.
Just yesterday I was using JRiver for several hours again for travelling - and this feedback  is far from being good:

  • Listening to music on JRemote2 is not possible without being constantly online. A clear step backward, compared to Gizmo, although I see jRemote2 as the successor of Gizmo.
  • Cannot switch off sub-titles in movies on jRemote2, if I donīt want them. Cannot select a sub-title, if I have one and want to.
  • Cannot give ratings to music or movies on jRemote2.

I get that, but the download cache isn't an easy feature to add. Craig (cncb) has been asked before about adding a download cache to MO 4Media, and this is what he said...

I am unlikely to implement some kind of "cache ahead" feature anytime soon due to the complexities it would introduce.  Sorry.

And I remember Hendrik being asked about it too and him mentioning it's not on his short term roadmap because it's not easy to implement.

I mean, it sounds like it's easy to do, but if experience is anything to go by it's anything but. I would not expect a download cache to be added to JRemote2 anytime soon.

As for the rest of your criticisms, as far as I know JRemote2 works fine with ratings, at least I know it does for audio. But you have to have authentication enabled and using it, because if you're using read-only authentication it can't make ratings changes (or any changes at all, e.g. playlist changes, etc.). Pretty sure the subtitle thing is known too, it's probably on Hendrik's roadmap.

Off topic and unhelpful.

Lots of our resources have gone into our remotes.  If you're still not happy, perhaps you should write your own.  The API has been used by several other people to do that.
