Not a Show Stopper..but
« on: April 10, 2003, 03:54:59 pm »

Not a Show Stopper..but it sure would be nice if the program was a little smarter. (just a request from a lazy person) hope all you coders are too, I found it to be one of my best quailities. did 37 years of it.

when moving files around we get this message

Why not see if there are any empty folders before you pop this up.  Would save lots of key strokes.

I know your at cruch time and need strokes so I will add.

This may be a show stopper for some people, but it's definitely a bug.

Can't get MC to play mp4 audio files, or aac files.  Set all file associations to MC, and tried both playing from MC and loading from Explorer.

Keep getting "Please select file(s) to play" error message instead of file loading.  Files are OK, play fine on other players, but not MC.

Tried all recent betas, including 9.0.147.

Anyone been able to get mp4's and aac's to work on the recent betas?

Running Win XP Pro SP1 with all current XP updates

I don't believe that MC supports aac or mp4 audio...yet. I don't think it's a bug. Someone correct me if I'm wrong.

Try renaming mp4 files to mpeg or maybe mpg.  Might work.

Tried renaming an mp4 audio file to mpg as suggested.

Did not work.   Moreover, instead of merely getting the "select  file(s) error message, attempting to play an mp4 audio file renamed as mpg caused Media Center to hang and crash.

Agilityman,

Where did you get mp4 files from? Are these QuickTime files?

Please give us a link or send me a file so we can figure out why it does not work. I did not have much luck finding mp4 files on the net.

Regards,
Nikolay

I think mp4 files are .aac files if I remember correctly.

They are quicktime also yeah if again my memory serves me correctly (this is all just stuff I remember from when I was looking into formats for my useless mp3 player).

The mp4 files that didn't work in MC were former wav files that had been encoded into mp4 audio with Nero's mp4 audio plugin.  They were not created with QuickTime.  I will gladly send you one of them to try by separate email.

mp4 is a type of aac, but not all aac files are mp4 and the mp4 files won't work if you change the extension from .mp4 to .aac.

The mp4 files worked in Quick Time 6 with no plugin, and in Winamp 2.81, FooBar 200, and MS Windows Media Player 9 with appropriate mp4 plugins, but would not work in MC.

I tried copying the Winamp mp4 plugin to the MC plugins folder, but that didn't help.

Nikolay,

I emailed you a couple know good mp4 file audio files, encoded with NEro's mp4 audio encoder, that won't play on MC.

For more mp4 files, both mp4 audio and mp4 video, try Envivio's mpeg-4 sampler page at   http://www.envivio.com/products/etv/content/quality.jsp

I tried several mp4 files from that page, both mp4 aac audio and mp4 video, and they'd play on Winamp and WMP 9, but not on MC 9.  MC 9 just gave a "Please select file(s) to play" error message.
