Windows 10 Dull colours after update [not just MC]
« on: February 18, 2021, 02:27:46 am »

Hi there. This is not as MC problem, but just wondered if anyone else here had seen this or better still fixed it. I let Windows do whatever updates it wants to, but after the last one (1-2 weeks ago) my system colours have all gone very washed out. I've done the usually searchs but havn't found anything definitive. I re-installed drivers, reset color schemes etc etc. but no luck. It's def the PC end, as I've checked the projector settings, and colours from other sources are fine.

Any thoughts.

I'd guess your color range or chroma settings are wrong (mismatched).

Windows desktop and all applications are washed out.

I've tried both the default and various Nvidia colour settings, but the problem persists. I don't play with the colour settings too much, so I'm confident that the only thing  likely to have changed is the windows update (until I updated the Nvidia driver, which had no apparent effect).

There are plenty of posts about similar colour problems with Windows updates over the years. In the last update on my W10 server, fast restart was switched on which screwed all my remote startup routines.

I'm having color issues with windows as well that seems update related. My problem though is that UHD rips are dark and seem too red. My desktop is darker too. I've tried a few things and once I get more time to play with it I'll post up my settings.

I did try updating my Nvidia driver and it didn't help. AFAIK I turned off W10's HDR and Night Light.

I've noticed that the color profile changed to a dull color at random after updating GPU drivers. I fixed it by forcing my default ICC color profile and all is well again.

I didn't do much experimentation but changing the Output Color Format in the Nvidia Control Panel changed things. I went from RGB to 4:2:2 to 4:4:4 and back to RGB. I tried in each mode and in 4:2:2 everything wasn't dark. In 4:4:4 everything looked good and the TV went into HDR mode. Then Going back to RGB the colors looked OK. But playing an HDR movie and hitting Stop didn't take the TV out of HDR mode.

I definitely don't have this sorted out but thought I'd share the findings.

PS. When the colors are too dark Tone Mapping in MadVR doesn't help. I have tried it with different Target Nits values and they don't help.
