I would like to ask if it's correct, that there is no option to play
- sacd.iso
- DSD / DSF files
streamed from JRiver27 to JRemote (version 3.35) on my iPhone (iPhone SE (iOS 14.4) / iPad). As far as I understand the "transcode" option has to be enabled (within JRemote) and mp3 is played.

Any plans to include a "transcode to flac" option or to play directly without transcoding?

To frame the question differently: Which option is offered by JRemote to play hires audio on a device?

Obviously, no iOS devices like the iPhone and the majority of Android devices can directly playback DSD content (because none of those devices support DSD). You'd have to convert DSD to PCM (which is always a lossy conversion) to be able to play it back on an iPhone. Media Center can convert DSD to PCM on-the-fly and assuming how powerful the machine you're running Media Center on, you might encounter issues with bottlenecks (glitches and pauses in the music) if your computer isn't fast enough to handle the DSD to PCM conversion on-the-fly. But like I said, it's a lossy conversion process so no matter what if you're converting DSD to PCM (or PCM to DSD, and DSD to DSD which has to go through a PCM stage in the middle which would be DSD > PCM > DSD) you're losing data in the conversion.

Now, in MC's Options > Media Network > Client Options > Audio Conversion set it to Convert audio if necessary then set the encoder to PCM 24-bit and see if that works better for you. Honestly though you'd probably have better luck converting all the DSD music you want to play on your iPhone ahead of time in Media Center 27 to save some time and avoid potential issues with bottlenecks because there won't be any on-the-fly conversion (as it's already converted).

I'm not sure this is true. I'm not a tech guy - so - I might just misunderstood, but for the iOS App Store there are two products, which seem to do exactly that:

• KaiserTone Audio Player +HiRe‪s (https://apps.apple.com/us/app/kaisertone-audio-player-hires/id725299207)
• Onkyo HF Player (not totally sure.... (https://apps.apple.com/us/app/onkyo-hf-player-hi-res-music/id704139896)

As far as I understand both players work with files stored ON THE DEVICE - not via streaming. I didn't test them - sorry.

As far as I understand, it is possible to play DSD files - which isn't the same as sacd.iso. It would be a nice feature, if JRemote could play DSD files (locally stored) and even better if JRemote could play sacd.iso and perfect: via streaming...


Coming back to your suggestion for the DSD conversion.
First and most important: In a perfect wold I would like to keep the sacd.iso file and not DSD files for each track (sorry for this but I just learnt very recently about the differences). As I understand, DSD is stereo OR multi-channel. Implying I'm loosing one or the other or I end up with redundant data...
This in mind: Does the feature "Convert audio if necessary" work with sacd.iso or only with DSD-files?

For the sacd.iso scenario I have negative results: The iPhone can't play the file if transcoding (to mp3) is disabled. - Can I test somehow, if I followed your advice on how to configure MC?

I have recently acquired some SACD files that contain both a stereo part and mch part and I convert them with TRAX (MacOS). I have mid/low level equipment so I don't think many people would be able to "hear" the difference between the original DSD and the mch FLAC I generate. I believe they sound fantastic.
When I do this, I can decide whether I want the stereo part, the multi-channel part, or both. So it is entirely up to me to decide what I want. It's not losing one part or the other, it's deciding which one you want if you want to avoid redundancy or get them both if you do not care about redundancy. Personally, I only care about the mch part so I willingly "sacrifice" the stereo part.
