Getting "spinning up drive" on MP3 but not on flac
« on: March 14, 2021, 05:45:38 am »

I'm fairly new to JRiver

Most of my 3 TB music library consist of flac files. They play just fine.  I double-click them they begin to play right away.

But ANY mp3 files - stored in the same folder on the same drive - ALWAYS gives me "spinning up drive."

Now, if this were a disk or network or even file system issue, ANY file I played would give me "spinning up drive"

But  **ONLY MP3 FILES RESULT IN SPINNING UP DRIVE**

Is this a bug in JRiver?  Is there a setting I need to adjust?  This behavior is unacceptable.

Any other audio player I have tried will IMMEDIATELY play these same mp3 files (Winamp, VLC, Windows Media Player, Adobe Audition, Media Monkey)  Only JRiver shows this problem.

Did you configure your AntiVirus/Defender to except MC?

Here is link on Defender https://yabb.jriver.com/interact/index.php/topic,114101.0.html

Also need to configure firewall to let MC through.

Likely MC needs to download some component for MP3 playback

Double check the locations.  It sounds like the files are on a different drive.  Double check that the files are actually there.

It's not an MC bug.

Configure Windows Defender.  There's a thread on it here.

It doesn't need to download for MP3.

Today the problem with MP3 files is not happening at all.  There's been no change to my system since the 14th, except I did reboot it.

Today JRiver plays MP3 files without "spinning up drive" messages, same as it plays FLAC files.

FYI  The MP3 and FLAC files are all on the same drive, a pair of 4 TB Western Digital "Gold" enterprise-class drives in RAID 0.  I measure sequential read rate off that drive array at 117 MB/sec, and random read rate of 11 MB/sec.  A read rate of 11 MB/sec is absolutely sufficient to smoothly play back an MP3 file with a rate of 256 KB/sec, in fact the disk random read rate  is 44 times faster than the data rate from the file.  So there is no way to blame this on a disk problem, unless JRiver doesn't know how to properly access data on a disk which seems unlikely.   Also, if it had been a disk problem then both FLAC and MP3 files would be impacted.
