How do you choose streaming movies to watch?
« on: April 01, 2021, 06:34:27 pm »

Last night, I wanted to watch an old Alfred Hitchcock movie called "Notorious".  It has Cary Grant and Ingrid Bergman and was made in 1946.

I did a search on Google, didn't find a way to watch it right away.

I searched at Amazon, found it, bought it, then realized it was a modern movie with the same name.

I sometimes go to IMDB to find a movie, but they are Amazon so you're not going to get much other than Amazon.

So how do you search and select, other than just using Netflix or just Amazon, etc.

Part of the reason I ask is to find out if there is an existing service that can help with selecting.

And part is that I'm thinking we might run an online database to help with it.

In MC, the interface could be very simple:

New Video
    Genre
    Actor
    Director
    Country

and so on.

Navigating to the movies themselves would offer the trailer and where to rent the movie.

I would certainly classify this as a problem.  I have YouTubeTV, Netflix, Amazon Prime, and HBO Now.  I open my Android TV (Shield), how do you know where to find something?  If I don't know what I want to watch and I'm just scrolling, then I'll go into each one based on a priority in my mind - feel like a movie, then HBO/ Netflix is going to be the go to.  Looking for a series, then Netflix is likely the top mark.  Looking for something live/ something on the cloud DVR, then YouTubeTV.  Amazon is last place and only if I want to watch something specific or haven't found anything else.  If I know what I want, then I grab my phone and go to this website: https://www.justwatch.com (they have an API: https://www.justwatch.com/us/JustWatch-Streaming-API).

I find it quite helpful.  Particularly to figure out if there are subtitles on a French film my wife wants to watch.  It would be nice to centralize this within a JRiver app of some form.

That's very helpful.  Thanks.
