Push to phone and render via Bluetooth speaker
« on: April 19, 2021, 04:53:10 am »

I was looking for a battery plus WiFi speaker that I could push to in my garden. But on the hardware forum I had no success finding a solution, as there seem to be very few battery plus WiFi speakers.

HOWEVER, there seem to be many battery plus Bluetooth speakers to choose from. So I think my plan B is to buy one of those. My idea is to push to JRemote on my phone, and let the phone render to the battery plus Bluetooth speaker.

My questions are:
- Does this work?
- Or is there a better solution?
- If using this approach what is the right media format to push, in order to avoid double transcoding between the original media, the MC server, the phone middleman, and the Bluetooth RF link?

It's still possible to find portable "boom boxes" with line input, so you could connect the phone that way and skip the bluetooth step. Some models also have a USB port. If you have an old Chromecast Audio or similar device it can be powered from the USB port and then you connect audio out from the CCA into the box's line in, effectively giving it a WiFi input. I did this for a few years, although my player was not battery operated.

Hmm. There’s a thought. I was thinking of the AudioPro C3, which has both an Aux input and Bluetooth (https://www.audiopro.com/en/product/addon-c3/#grey)

The Sonos Move is a battery powered, WiFI speaker. They claim 10 hours of play time before recharging.   You can access it through the Sonos software, so it has access to all the streaming services and Sonus Radio, plus access to your on-disk tracks. Plus, you can use Alexa with it, which I find useful outdoors.

JRiver can access the individual Sonos speaker through DLNA, although, as you know, keeping multiple speakers in sync with MC is an issue. I have not tried accessing Sonos speakers through JRemote. As a Sonos WiFI speaker, it plays Redbook flac files without any transcoding.

NOTE: I have not tried to access my Sonos speakers from MC in a while, and they do not currently show up as options in Playing Now, not sure why. They used to be there.
