Advice and feedback welcomed
« on: July 05, 2021, 12:50:29 am »

OK.  First a little history, I have used JRiver for about 8 years and my extent of use was to tell JRiver where my music files were and it imported all of it into the library and I just used it to play music through a DAC.  It was all simple plug and play and I really never learned much more about it.  It worked and I never bothered to learn more.  Moving forward I got talked into changing my stereo setup and going DSP.  Honestly I am beginning to think this was a mistake but I have bought the hardware and I am either going to sink or swim.  MY main speakers are two way horn loaded speakers and I do have a sub.  I have 3 amps, one to power the speaker horns, an amp for the speaker bass bins and one for the sub.  I have been encouraged to try audiolense and it will develop my crossovers and perform time /Freq corrections for the listening position.  I will be using a RME UCX as my hardware interface with the computer to make this happen.  I just built a new computer and now have the latest JRiver MC 28 loaded.  after scanning the manual for the RME and looking into the JRiver convolution engine I know I am way out of my comfort zone.  So I am asking for some words of wisdom on how to get started and get it all setup?  Any feedback would be greatly appreciated.  I know this will take time and patience.

Also It was pointed out to me the other day when I was finishing up my computer and copying all of my music over to SSD drives that all of my music is in MP4 format.  The guy told helping me told me this format is really not the best but it will work.  My question is JRiver will play it and has for years but is there any settings in there that I should adjust to optimize the playback for MP4?

Thanks!

Not exactly sure what the intended end result is here - I have the RME Multiface in the studio here and using MC with it is as easy as telling MC which audio driver to use and off you go. Nothing more is needed in that respect. The comment about the "convolution" engine is a little fuzzy - exactly what does that have to do with getting some music playing in MC?

If your music is all "compressed" MP4 (Assuming that it is) - sounds like you may have been a Apple fan at one time? MC will handle that with no issues - and there is little needed in the way of optimizing playback as MC is about as bit perfect as it gets.

When you are playing something back in MC - just look for the "blue glow" on the gear icon in the upper right of the interface when a track is playing - that indicates bit perfect playback with nothing else interfering with the audio stream. That is where you want to be with any given format. I use lossless FLAC for all tracks but MP4 should sound great.

Cheers!

"blue glow" on the gear icon in the upper right of the interface when a FLAC file is playing ? Fist time I've heard of that one. Would be great, but my gear icon only changes to blue when I hover the mouse over it, but all my text turns blue when I hover the mouse over it. Could it be the Modern Cards: Dark Edition (modified) skin that I'm using that may be preventing the "blue glow" effect?

Thanks for bringing this "feature" up to our attention.

The stock Modern Cards: Dark Edition skin shows the blue gear when bit-perfect output is being used just fine. It might be the modded skin you're using, you might trying different skins to see if it works with them, if so, it's likely the modded skin you're using.

See pics attached.
First one is with a DSP conversion therefore not bit perfect.
Second one has the blue Icon and is bitperfect as no DSP changes are made by MC.  I guess one could debate that having Volume Leveling + Adaptive Volume is not bitperfect so just turn these off...

IMHO if Adaptive Volume is fixed (Make sure Audio Analysis has been run) you're good to go but for serious listening I still turn it off... ... Any feedback on this would be great! (64bit Digital volume etc...)
