Playing DVD's In MC9
« on: March 30, 2003, 04:33:32 pm »

Since I Have Not Had A DVD On My Computer For Soe time And This One has A Nice DVD Player\Writer

I Just Tried Playing A DVD In the Following

1. Windows Media Player
2. WinDvd 4
3. Media Center 9.0.137

It seems The DVD Plays Better In Media Center Than The Others Since It Crops The Video And Does Not Display Some Of The Garbage At The Bottom Of The Screen.

Nicely Suprised...

Yes, I was also surprised how much DVD playback had improved in MC9 since I last tried it.

There are two features where WinDVD excels over MC9:
1) You can read ifo/vob files from disk, so if you have a lot of disk space you can copy your dvd's directly to disk without any compressing.

2) If there is a TV attached as a second monitor, WinDVD detects it automatically and goes full screen on the TV screen, while displaying the video on your CRT/TFT monitor as well. MC9 cannot do that! And it displays the video only on one of the two screens!

I hope MC9 will catch up on this!

Yes, the lack of IFO playing is a real disappointment.  I have lots of DVDs ripped to my hard drive, and it is a pain having to exit MC9 and go into PowerDVD everytime I want to watch one of them.  I dream of being able to play them from my MC9 media library just like I can with AVIs.

J River - we were promised this feature earlier - will it make it into v9, and if not, will we see it in a later version?

Playback of IFO and VOB works for us.

Media Center supports VOB files, but there are some restrictions. The major restriction is that you have to have full copy of a DVD on your harddrive. That includes copying all the folders and all VOB and IFO files.

Drag and drop of IFO files does not work, but you can drag and drop VOB files.

Hi JimH and Nikolay,

thanks for the info! Just fiddled around a bit - yes, it works - with some restrictions!  But it was not easy to sort it out! Beta testing is hard enough, but finding out how things are supposed to work is almost impossible without knowing!  A little bit more infos about how things are supposed to work would really be helpful!

So what I found was the following:

I have one DVD in folder V:\Video\Rip\XXX\YYY with 9 files altogether (ifo and vob). The .bup file don't seem to be necessary.

The only way to import the DVD is selecting all files in Windows Explorer, right click and then import - Only one file out of 9 is being imported, don't know which one! Then you can click play and the video starts. You can even rename the default title to whatever you want.

But you cannot click on folder XXX or YYY and import, nor is it possible to import from the menu Tools>Import Media.

YYY was originally name VIDEO_TS as on the DVD, but does not seem to be required. XXX would be the DVD title. Unfortunately right clicking on the title and then importing does not work! So it is not MC9 standard behaviour!

A structure such as V:\Video\DVD-Title\[ifo,vob] would be convenient. Then you could select V:\Video and import all titles!

Also there is no file association for ifo/vob files!
