New NAS and MC27 don't get along
« on: August 09, 2021, 08:07:16 pm »

This is something of a cross post from the MC for Mac forum:

I just installed a QNAP NAS at my house.  It is supposed to be working with our Netgear Nighthawk router and my Mac Mini media computer (just updated to OSX Big Sur).  The NAS doesn't communicate properly with MC27.  My question is: does anyone in the Windows world have that trouble, or is an installation like this plug-and-play for you?  It's been anything but for me.

My current troubles are:
MC27 crashes every time I try to Import my library audio files (I finally got my various video Libraries to Import.
The NAS will not read video files so I can watch movies (I haven't tried audio files because that Library isn't Imported yet).

Enable logging in Media Center and reproduce the crash. Usually bad files are the cause of crashes when importing, so using logging should tell you what the last file it was trying to import was before crashing, then you can move out that file and see if Media Center will import the rest of the files without crashing. If it does still crash, rinse and repeat.

Thanks, Awesome Donkey, I will do that.  In the mean time, here are the last two entries from Terminal after I tried importing again this evening:

objc[6295]: Class JRNSView is implemented in both /Applications/Media Center 27.app/Contents/MacOS/JRWorker2.app/Contents/MacOS/JRWorker2 (0x1050dbcc0) and /Applications/Media Center 27.app/Contents/MacOS/libJRReader.dylib (0x10a9b1870). One of the two will be used. Which one is undefined.
objc[6295]: Class JRNSWindow is implemented in both /Applications/Media Center 27.app/Contents/MacOS/JRWorker2.app/Contents/MacOS/JRWorker2 (0x1050dbd10) and /Applications/Media Center 27.app/Contents/MacOS/libJRReader.dylib (0x10a9b18c0). One of the two will be used. Which one is undefined.

A log from tonight.  FWIW, there are approximately 30,000 files in my Music sub-folder, and during tonight's attempt at importing only 4044 files were counted.  I hope that means 25,956 files have already been imported.

Hope springs eternal.

I have no problem accessing FreeNAS from Windows10.

What protocol you use for sharing from QNAP? (I use SMB as it plays nice with Windows ... if you only have macs connected, it might be worthwhile for you to use AFP as it plays nice with macs)

That could be the problem, the QNAP NAS used SMP by default.  The only computer which needs access to this NAS in my Mac, for media server duties.

Mac should work with SMB too … what version of SMB Qnap is using by default?

EDIT: googling the problem … seems Big Sur has problem with SMB in initial release … apparently version 11.3 and later solved it

Which version of MacOS you running?

Thanks to everyone for helping me out.  I loaded a trial version of MC28 on my PC and everything worked properly immediately.  I've decided to switch platforms.  My Mac Mini is now sitting in a closet...

I now have a few new questions:

Will my Library from MC for Mac work with MC for Windows, or do I have to build a new Library?  I am not worried so much about re-importing everything (done), but I don't want to have to remember how to do all those things I've only done once like configure where my album art is stored, pointing MC to where I keep my TV show art, and other various settings.

When I started the MC28 trial version and created a new Library, a portion of my meta data seems lost.  The most obvious and immediate example is song/ show ratings.  Is that a problem with my new Library, or is it a problem with the files I copied from my external hard drives to my NAS?  Or is it something else?

This is for the MC staff: can my license be converted from Mac to Windows?  We will not longer have any Apple products in our house, so I don't need a master license.
