I have an odd situation with tag data being copied (or not).

Let's say I have an album called XYZ [VR] (where the VR is for Vinyl Rip), and I then get a copy that is from CD, which is just called XYZ. They are stored in two different windows folders. I want to replace the [VR] copy and delete it.
In that first album I have quite a lot of data about the musicians & instruments spread over 4 tags, and so the easiest way to get it into the new version is to temporarily call the new version
ABCD [VR] and the data pops up nicely.
(I have several ways of viewing the new album so that it is not blended in with the old.)

The strange thing is that I can get several outcomes from this:
1. If I then change the new album back from XYZ [VR] to just XYZ
mostly the data all disappears from the new album, but not always.
2. While the new album is still under the old name (and hence has data) if I then delete the old tracks from the MC library
mostly the data all disappears from the new album, but not always.
3. If I leave the new album under the old name (and hence has data), delete the old tracks
AND LEAVE IT OVERNIGHT
I can then rename the new album to just XYZ and the data sticks.

What strange magic is going on in the background, and how can I hurry it up? (refreshing the view does nothing)

Antivirus?  Have you configured Windows Defender?  Any other antivirus, etc.?

I don't have any active anti-virus apart from Defender (which I don't think I've configured – should I?). I have Malwarebytes, but I have to initiate that.

I'm just reading Awesome Donkey's thread on Defender now.

The next time this happens I might shut down MC and restart it to see what that might do. WHen I was talking about the overnight thing, that means I have put the computer to sleep, not shut down. I shutdown/restart about every 3 days usually.

Ok, so Defender hadn't been configured since I had MC 20! I've updated everything (including the backups disc) to MC 28, and will see if the problem surfaces again.

I may be able to trigger it by pulling out the latest example from backups to see what happens.

Actually I don't think that bringing in a backed-up old version will reveal anything:
Those 4-5 tags that contain the data are all marked "Store data in tags where possible", and they are indeed written to the files.
I thought that the data was written to the tags immediately, but maybe there's a delay, and I should Update Tags from Library?

I really don't think it was a Defender problem (but good to have updated that), and I say that because of the number of times when it works seamlessly (change the new title to the old, data comes in, change it back to the new, data sticks). I did a whole bunch of albums recently when I took the sample rates down to 48k from 96k or 176k, and it was during that (lengthy) process that I noticed this happening apparently randomly (but I doubt it was random - software doesn't do random unless told to).
