I was thinking the same thing... Apple loves to lock permissions down without considering any cost benefit to the user.  It's especially great when you're relying on pretty old software you have that is no longer in active development for them to break what just works.  This is the biggest beauty Windows has over the Mac is that apps that work will always work even if they expand security they don't make changes that break existing software.
