MC After Version 131 Won't Install...
« on: March 26, 2003, 03:02:59 pm »

As per request from JimH, I'm starting a new thread on this issue.

I?m having problems installing any version of MC after version 131 on my XP Pro system.

Am getting the following error screens...

"Errors Encountered While Performing the Operation.
Look at the information window for more details."

But there were no more details.

This happens about 1/4 of the way through the initial Setup screen.

131 will install ok but 132, 133, & 134 won't.

I did an un-install of MC & re-tried installing 134, 133, 132... still get the same error screen. 131 installed just fine.

I did the following in an attempt to get MC to install?

* Un-installed 131.
* Removed all references in the Win XP Registry for JRiver, Media Center, & Media Jiukebox.
* Rebooted computer.
* Ran Norton Win Doctor to clean all bad references.
* Re-booted computer.

132, 133, & 134 still will not install but 131 will.

Also deleted JRImage.dll form the system folder per Matts? suggestion? still can?t install any version after 131.

HELP!!!

It could be a temp file space problem

Try this:

IE/Tools/Internet Options/Temporary Internet Files/Delete Files.

Empty the trash.

Hi Jim;

Tried your suggestion.  Still can't install 132, 133, or 134.

131 goes right in with no problems.

Any more ideas?

Other music software?

Any more details?

Doc,

Many times with this kind of problem it's not the browser temp files but the trash left from installing stuff that causes the problem.

If you're running Win 2K or XP I'd try "chkdsk /f" first to check for logical disk errors.  Click Start then Run, type in "chkdsk /f" with a space after chkdsk and no quotes and hit return.  A DOS box will pop up telling you it can't lock the drive and asking if you want to do it on next boot.  Type a y and the box goes away.  Restart and the chkdsk will run.  Retry the install.

If that doesn't work run Windows Explorer and go to  "C:\Documents and Settings\yourloginname\Local Settings\Temp".  Delete all files and sub-directories under Temp, empty the recycle bin, reboot and try the install again.

Good Luck,
Dave

Hi LanManCan;

Welcome to Interact.  Your going to love this site.  Lots of great people like yourself!

Tried you suggestions... Chkdsk found no errors.

Re-booted & tried to install again... no luck.  Same problem... 131 will install but 132, 133, & 134 won't.

I also deleted all the files under C:\Windows\Temp.  That also did not help.

Finally I did an MSConfig startup with only Basic services loaded.  Still could not install 132, 133, or 134.

I think something in the install routine must of changed starting with version 132.

The only thing I have not tried is to defrag the drive but don't really see how that would impact program installing; beside version 131 installs perfectly.

Thanks for the welcome, Doc.  This site certainly is dynamic and alive!  Good recommendation for the product.

I've had a defrag work just such a miracle more than once when I was out of logical ideas.  Just takes sooo stenkin long on NTFS.

There are just too many registry variables to find them all.  If you've been MC beta-ing a while, the setups have changed dramatically several times.  A good FAST reg search program helps here.  Try Registry Crawler if you don't have one:  http://www.4dev.com/

Doc,

Just remembered another trick that has worked.  Set the size of your swap file manually to say 20 MB.  Reboot and then set it back to let windows manage it or manually like I do and reboot.  If you set it manually to the same min/max size it won't ever get fragmented.  I always set mine to twice my installed RAM.

Dave;

I've got a defrag scheduled to run later tonight.

I've always used min & max swap file as same size (twice my RAM size).  Also I have it on another identical drive (D) on the outer track.  Seems to help a little in the speed department as drive C does not have to both open / close files plus manage the swap file.

I'll let you know tomorrow if the defrag helped or not.

I still think something has changed in version 132 as 131 installs without any problems.

I'm going to bed.  See you tomorrow.

Even if using a static swap file size, the purpose of setting it way down initially was to clear it out.  Have had weirdness disappear in doing this and can only assume that the swap file may also become corrupt.

Retiring also, good luck.

Could you detail exactly what you see when it won't install?

Does it show the "decompressing" progress box?
Does it show the setup stuff?
When exactly is the crash?

Thanks.

Matt;

After double clicking on the MediaCenter90134.exe the initial Media Center dialog comes up saying..

"Media Center 9.0 Setup is preparing Install Wizard which will guide you through the rest of the setup process.  Please wait."

The progress gauge starts running but about 20% of the way through the following error screen comes up...

"Errors encountered while performing the operation.
Look at the information window for more details."

There is an OK button but no more details come up when it is pressed.

This happens on versions 132, 133, & 134 but not on 131 which installs ok.

Hope you find this bugger as I want to see the neat new logo everyone is talking about.

Thanks

Doc,
I think it's a temp file space problem or a problem with unpacking.

Try cleaning up this folder

C:\Documents and Settings\[yourusername]\Local Settings\Temp

Where is your system temp directory at? My path is c:\temp. It can help to delete everything contained within except the directory itself.

To find your temp directory right click on My Computer and select Properties. Now select Advanced>Enviroment Variables. You should see temp and tmp. Note path (or better yet create a directory called c:\temp and change the path for each to it). Close the windows...(if you keep the original dir then) go to that directory with an Explorer window and clean the directory out. Maybe do a reboot afterwards. Doing this has made installation problems go away on many a program.

All this is great except why does 131 install without any problems?  132, 133, & 134 won't?

Something was changed in the install starting with 132.

We're stumped.

All that's happening when it crashes is file decompression.  Our installer hasn't even started at that point.

If you have a few minutes, maybe try creating another user account on your PC and see if the new MC will install there.  It might give us some clues.

Thanks!

Doc,
Have you made ANY changes to your system that could be related?

How about automatic Windows updates, for example.

This problem seems to be only on your PC.

The install download is just a self-extracting RAR.

Try extracting all the files from MediaCenter90135.exe using the latest version of WinRAR. (www.winrar.com)

Then, simply run "InstallWizard.exe".

If it won't extract, let us know.  It could be cooked memory or bad downloads.

Thanks and sorry for all the hoops.

Hi Guys;

I found WinRar 3.11 on the ZD Net site.

When I tried to extract MC9 135 WinRar give the following error message...
C:\Temp\01\Media Center 90135.exe: CRC failed in Media Jukebox\TV\MJTVControl.dll.  The file is corrupt.
C:\Temp\01\Media Center 90135.exe: Unexpected end of archive.

Does this mean there is a bad MJTVControl.dll in MC9?

No.  TV works here in 135.

I don't know what the problem could be.  Bad file?  Virus?  Bad OS?  Bad memory?

What is the file size?

Just downloaded WinRar 3.20 beta 2 (latest version)... same problem reporting a corrupt MJTVControl.dll.

Jim; Windows update is set for semi-automatic to always ask me first before installing any update but I always let it do it.

I don't understand why 131 will install but all since then will not

I think tomorrow I will do a re-istall of Win XP Pro.

I want to say a GREAT BIG THANKS to all of you for your help.

Dave;

Just deleted my swap file, rebooted without a swap file... still could not install 135.

Re-set swap file to twice my RAM (both min & max), re-booted... same problem.

Have you tried sacrificing a small farm animal on the keyboard?

I have this friend who can get you a really great price on an exorcism....

Out of ideas for now but a repair type re-install will take less than an hour.  Hate that diminishing returns thing and usually beat it up for a week when a format c colon the first afternoon would have been more practical.

Best,
Dave

Does anybody else have problems with the RAR files? (I think it'd be noisier if they did)

If not, my best guess is that your downloads are bad -- for whatever reason.  If your hardware / driver / memory freaked out, it may not be able to download and save new files properly.  Can you download on some other computer and burn a copy?

We'll play around with the RAR stuff a bit on our end tomorrow to see if we find anything.

Thanks Doc.

DocLotus,

there is really no need to do a format c: with Windows XP or Windows 2000. Since I started using NT4 I never had to do one single format c:! This is just outdated habit hanging over from old DOS/Win3.11 days.

If the disks are OK, just proceed to repair WXP. The repair function of Windows XP has been greatly improved compared to Windows 2000 and as it was said, it will take less than an hour (it took 2-3 hours with Windows 2000). As far as I remember it will automatically detect SP1 and Hotfixes installed and reinstall them as time is going by.

But before you start repairing, do the following:

1) Check the Event Viewer for any unusual messages (lots of people never look at that!) Any kind of hardware failures should show up in some event log messages!

2) Use System Recovery and step back a few checkpoints. It may deinstall some software installed recently. This usually can help a lot. System Recovery is activated by default, but can be deactivated by the user!

Hey Guys...

;D IT WORKS!!!!!!!! ;D

Matt said...

"my best guess is that your downloads are bad -- for whatever reason.'

That got me to thinking.  Star Downloader...  www.StarDownloader.com provided a new update (version 1.42) about the time all this problem started.

I just removed the Star Downloader integration from my Opera 7 browser.  I then re-downloaded MC 135 using just Opera's built-in downloader.  PROBLEM SOLVED!

Seems like the new Star Downloader version 1.42 has a problem with RAR files.

I think Star is written by an individual & he may not be aware of the RAR format as I also was not until all this came up.  There are so many compression formats out there that I (like a lot of others) tend to ignore all but ZIP.

Maybe JRiver needs to contact Star about this so the two companies can work out the bug.

In case I haven't already said so...

A GREAT BIG THANKS to all who helped me with this very sticky problem.  What a GREAT bunch of guys!

To all the guys at JRiver...

135 looks simply GREAT!.

Missing 4 versions really has made a difference.

The new logo rocks!

The new icons look simply wonderful.

The menus are looking great.

Boy, this is turning into one fantastic product... bar none.

Doc,
The downloader must be flawed.  A rar file and a zip file are both binary files.  If it works or doesn't work on one, it will also likely behave the same on another.

You could do Star a favor by reporting it because you've got something he can use to reproduce the problem.
