Volume Control Still not working on MacBook Pro M1Pro [Solved]
« on: November 12, 2021, 01:51:02 pm »

I've seen since April that volume control is lost in MC28. It will play out of speakers and headphones at the same time.

I just tested a few things on my M1 Macbook Pro running MC 28.0.72:

1.  Playing to external DAC:  Used MC's volume control and it worked.
2.  Playing to "default core audio"
  A.  Set to Mac audio output to Macbook pro speakers.  Volume control in MacOS works.  Volume control in MC works.
  B.  Plugged in headphones:  Speakers keep playing, no sound from headphones.
  C.  Changed Mac audio output to external headphones.  Speakers no longer play.  Headphones now play.  Volume control in MacOS works.  Volume control in MC works.

Note that I stopped and restarted playback in MC between all tests for the audio device change to take effect.

There are workarounds, like running Apple Music app in the background. But I have also had times without any ability to even highlight an output source, much less select one.
My external Meridian DAC will only be selectable or controllable if Apple Music app has already been run with it.
I'm sure the ciders still consider that a bug, even with workarounds that don't always work.

MC on Mac uses a very straightforward Mac API for showing devices.
If it doesn't show up immediately that's an issue between the device and the OS. Check for a device firmware and/or driver update.

Hmm, I don't really understand what you are saying.  You seem to be reporting 3 different things.

How are you trying to select an audio device?  Are you using Tools > Options > Audio > Audio Device ?  That's the primary way to select MC's output device.

What I am reporting is the inability to control the volume on any device. As another person in this thread noted, it plays out of both speakers and head phones at the same time. I use the Mac OS Sound preferences to choose outputs. Everything works perfectly with Apple Music App, but I loose the ability to even select a source when only MC28 is open, and only sometimes.
The M1Pro is a new product, so there are bound to be a lot of OS bugs, but I only report the ones that are MC28 specific, and other apps that access the same devices do not experience the same issues. I did notice in release notes from an earlier version that volume control is listed as a known issue. So, I am really just confirming that it's still an issue.
Unfortunately the bugs I am experiencing make MC28 unusable in its current state.

MC28.0.79 plays a song for a second, stops and spins.

Re: BUG REPORT_ Music Will not play on MC28 at all
« Reply #8 on: November 16, 2021, 05:20:48 pm »

So I downloaded and installed .84 and the exact problem was there, play for one second then wheel of death.
So, I deleted my library and imported a new library from a different source. Now it won't play any tracks. I get "Buffering 0%" but then my track choice disappears from the shuttle bar altogether. So in a day my MC28 has devolved from having a volume issue to not working at all as a music player.
I checked the Privacy settings and MC28 is still listed. Perhaps I will try to delete those?
Really at a loss here. Yes, I have rebooted the machine. Out of ideas here.

I would;d like to add that I have used MC on Windows with my Meridian DAC for years without issue.

Where is the media stored that you are trying to play?

What is MC set to under
Tools->Options->Audio?

Originally the media was stored on the 1TB internal boot drive, then an external drive.
I went into Tools>Options>and played around with the audio path. After trying a couple of different tragic options I eventually reselected Core Audio and got music to play. In the interim I tried resampling to lower Hz rates and when Core Audio came back to life the downsampled files were hilariously awful. Once I turned the DSP settings back to No Change the music played fine.
So that issue of files not playing seems to be related to the Core Audio bridge?
SO perhaps the lesson here is never to use the OS to select your output device, even if it has the urge to do it automatically?

You certainly have more control over the situation if you select the device directly in MC.

I just wanted to add a new observation-
I recently installed the Tidal app on my same MacBook Pro M1Pro and it has the same volume and audio device control issues that MC28 does. So, with not particularly scientific analysis to back me up, I'm going to lean towards this being an OS issue.
