Dolby Vision on Windows 10
« on: November 18, 2021, 08:21:00 am »

Hello,

I am trying to watch Dolby Vision on JRiver on my Windows 10 PC.
It seems JRiver / Windows 10 does not let Dolby Vision meta data get through.

Did anyone succeed on Windows 10 to use Dolby Vision with JRiver  ?

If yes ... how of course 🙂

Thank you!

As far as I know nothing will play DV on the PC. I rip my DV discs to MKV and can play them with JRiver and MO4media on my Shield.

Thank you.

That is also what I believe since I can't find any positive experience though I am googling a lot looking for an answer.
I wonder what is the purpose of that Dolby Vision Windows extension... That is what keeps me hoping.

I don't expect Windows to do the color mapping (it requires hardware like hdfurry arcana), but I would like Windows (or the player?) at least not to remove DV metadata from the videostream!

Thats for gaming ... so games can implement DV

EDIT: your safest bet to play DV movies is Nvidia Shield ... i use it with Plex

@tij why Plex? Every time I try setting it up I hate it. I'm guessing their player controls are better. MC on Android is still pretty lousy when it comes to controlling it with a Harmony.

EDIT: obviously i personally prefer MC :)

Isn't there something with "profile 5" vs "profile 7"? You can add Dolby Vision profile 5 to an MKV i think? Not sure if that means you can play it on a PC though, (not sure the player have to support it, can't you just send the metadata to the TV? I am probably mistaken though, as everyone seem to be struggling with DV)

You are correct in that you are mistaken. DV on a PC is only for games right now.

I would use my Shield exclusively for video playback but I hate the controls and the views aren't great either.
