Cannot use pause when playing to my Onkyo AVR

I use Media Center 28.0.88 on a Win 10 PC to control play of music (mostly flac) from a Synology NAS to an Onkyo TX-RZ840.  It all works fine, and has for a long time, except I just noticed I cannot pause a playing music file (with the pause button or control P).  Perhaps related is I've also notice that if I close Media Center while playing music, the music continues for a very long time (don't recall this happening previously).  If I use the Windows Player, or play to my Pioneer LX500, the pause button works as it should.  So apparently some type of mismatch to the Onkyo.  All other functions to the Onkyo work fine.  Does anyone have a suggestion of how to fix this?
