Can't Access Most of My Music
« on: November 15, 2021, 07:11:52 pm »

I can't access 75% of my music and I'm at my wit's end. I read through this and did not see a post on how to fix this.

Did this get answered? I can't access 75% of my music and I'm at my wit's end. I read through this and did not see a post on how to fix this.
We need more information on what your configuration is.

What is your audio output device?
Where are the files you are playing, on the Id in it's storage share or on a network mounted drive?
Are you having issues with particular types of files?

I have my license. In your reply you asked Do you have a JRiver Id?  I don't know where  to find that.

Bob asked "We need more information on what your configuration is."

Are you having issues with particular types of files?

I'm assuming the Audio Output device is my Pono. The files I'm playing are accessed through Media Centre 27. As for types of files I use Flac and I have both music I purchased from Pono, Pro studio  and HD Tracks and cds that I have ripped that no longer play.

Sorry for the confusion. I just figured out that JRiver Id is a device. I was reading it as ID. I do not have a JRiver Id.

OK, but where are they stored?  Hover your mouse over a track you can't play and then over a track you can't.  Note the location in the pop-up Tool Tip.

They are probably not where you think they are.  The drive letter may have changed, for example.
What is the exact error message?

The error message reads "Something went wrong with playback. Details: The file could not be found. Check that the filename in the library matches the filename on the disk.

I did as you said. the playable track was on drive C the ones that didn't play are on drive F.
Thanks for getting back to me. And being patient. Is this an easily resolved problem?

Look to see if the file exists, using Windows Explorer.

It's possible the drive letter changed.  Look on other drives.

I'm not having any luck. The missing music files are not in drive F (it is an external hard drive and is pretty much full but no music). I checked in other drives but could not find any that I looked for.

Are you unable to find the files anywhere?  Did you try a search from Explorer?

Sorry missed your reply. I tried albums that I can play. They show up. Albums that I can't play (tried a few) don't show up.

Yes, searched with explorer. No good luck. The files that won't play can't be found.

Are the missing files on the Pono? Perhaps ONLY on the Pono?
It will show up as a drive (2 drives actually if you have a SDCard in it).
Perhaps windows has re-assigned your drives.

There are most of the missing files on my Ponos. Some music hadn't been added (I've been increasing the size of the SD cards) so those albums are likely gone for good. I'm thinking about giving up on JRiver and just copying the music from my Ponos (and SD cards) onto an external hard drive and sharing it back  to the new SD cards as they arrive.. I was hoping for a bit of help with this but so far none has been forthcoming.

Bob is JRiver's expert on Pono.

If the files are on the Pono, you can remove the microSD card and copy the files from it to your computer.

That's what I think I'll do. But how do I prevent the problem from happening again?

You should make sure that you always have at least 2 copies of your music.
Take the SDCard out of the Pono and put it into a USB SDCard reader and use the windows file Explorer to copy the files to a backup location (like to your PC Music directory).

If you have files on the internal Pono drive you'll have to connect the Pono via USB and it will show up both in MC and also as removable drive(s) under Explorer.

You can use Explorer again to copy those from the removable drive(s) to a backup location.

The Pono is deadly slow copying files using a USB cable to it.
It was never fast but somewhere in the last firmware updates they really messed it up.

I don't bother with the internal drive, I put everything on a SDCard and use MC to treat it as a handheld copying files from the Music directory on my PC. That's as fast as your SDCard and computer can go. In my case REALLY fast.
The reason I use MC to copy the files to the SDCard and not just explorer is that I have some music that the Pono can't play natively so I setup the SDCard as a handheld in MC with the proper conversion parameters. If all of your tracks are playable by the Pono you could just use Explorer to move them onto the Pono.

I have a 400GB SDCard for my Pono with all of my Music on it (and the PC too and also on a PC backup).

When you fill one of those from scratch it takes the Pono a couple of hours to index it when you first turn it on :)
