Missing hw without any conversions output in Manjaro Linux
« on: January 07, 2022, 04:01:29 pm »

Hello, I've recently started to test some Linux distros, and was surprised by JRiver ALSA direct hardware connection without any conversions in Ubuntu. Previously, I was using the Windows version of J River, but I kinda felt the WASAPI driver sounded muddy and lacked detail, while the ASIO one was a bit better, but induced hearing fatigue very quickly.

Then I Installed Manjaro and downloaded JRiver through AUR respositories. It went fine until I noticed it was resampling 44.1kHz to 48kHz, and the hw output was missing. Also, audio quality was worse than Ubuntu.

Can I somehow manage to add this output by tinkering with ALSA?

What I've done is take the contents of alsa.conf on a Ubuntu install and save it somewhere, then edit the alsa.conf after installing a distro like Arch Linux (including Manjaro), Fedora, etc. and copy/paste the contents of Ubuntu's alsa.conf into that distro's alsa.conf file and rebooting to gain the hw: and front: outputs. If that kind of thing is difficult it's probably best to stick with Ubuntu in this case. There's probably a way to automate and generate this on Arch Linux/Manjaro/Fedora/etc., but I've never looked into it finding it's just easier to use Ubuntu's alsa.conf contents. The downside is, every time there's an ALSA update you'll probably have to redo the alsa.conf edits.

I don't work for JRiver... I help keep the forums safe from "male enhancements" and other sources of sketchy pharmaceuticals.

Thank you, it worked.

Also, in Linux JRiver version, can I route system audio through its audio processing engine for using DSP?

No, that's a windows only feature at this time.
