if a rip fails, it just says "rip failed" but provides no other information at all

looking in the logs, I could see the proximate cause

it would be helpful to be able to push such errors up to the user, e.g. as an error dialog

Alternatively it would be useful to add a log viewer to the UI, this could

* apply colour coding (e.g. for errors)
* allow filtering by the user or by known subcomponents
* translate timestamps to local time
