There is a chance such files will be supported soon (not with pass-through to the display though), check back in January.

Dolby vision has been possible since July of 2020.
Google android tv, Nvidia Shield pro 2019,and several android tv devices.
Rip to mkv, install Mo4media,then you are go0d to go
Your tv must have dv capabilities.

But I think Hendrik meant that from January it will be possible to have DV also on TVs or projectors that do not natively support it, as happens with tonemapping HDR on SDR projectors.

Or not?

The DV film should play as HDR. Right now there is no DV from PC. Not sure why you are getting green and purple. You can play DV MKVs on a 2019 Nvidia Shield and some other players.

I haven't Nvidia Shield. i have 3060 Ti. DV extention from microsoft store.
I watch hdr through madVR on JRiver. But DV has incorrect colors on JRiver.

But base player Windows 10 "Film and TV" plays DV film correct color

Right now there are many Dolby vision enabled display laptops available in the market. I have read many claims that people are able to play dolby vision videos using Movies &Tv app(microsoft)  by installing the Microsoft HEVC extension and Dolby Vision extension from Windows store.  I know this query is not related to JRiver but does that mean that it is now possible to play dolby vision files locally on such  laptops ?

But don't be surprised if DV is only available when using Microsoft's Film & TV app as it appears that is the only app that is DV Enabled

Is really getting another hardware device to do it "possible" on PC?

In order to have DV bitstreamed to the display, the Dolby DV libraries have to be used. It's what Dolby provides to game developers for instance, as well as anyone willing to pay the fees (Dolby has a developer program, see here or here).

What is coming to LAV filters according to what I see in the GitHub commits, is the ability to use the DV metadata to perform color space conversion and tone mapping. The display will not switch to DV mode and will not receive DV metadata itself, but instead will be used in HDR10 mode, with LAV video performing the necessary mapping and conversion operations to properly render the HDR content. Also, as far as I can tell, this mapping will not use the display characteristics (DV displays have their calibration data stored inside in order for the DV chip in them to perform conversions and mapping customized to the characteristics of that display), likely because LAV video has no access to that data, but instead will do conversion to standard BT2020 primaries and gamut. Also, same is coming for HDR10+ video streams. I might be wrong about this, but that's what it seems to me by looking at the commits.

Edit: I've just tested this new functionality, and it seems to work fine for Dolby Vision 8.1 Profile files, but it does not work for Dolby Vision 5 Profile files. The test files used are official Dolby DV mp4 files from this page. Both files work fine in Microsoft's Movies & TV application with the Dolby Vision extension from the Microsoft Store installed.

I understand, we will have to wait for MC29. After all, it seems right that an excellent job like what you are doing is rewarded :)
