A couple of days ago I wanted to do some cleanup of the MC database tags (song names, mostly).  When i do such a cleanup, I will then press F6 to make sure the file location on the disk represents the new tag info (i.e., artist, album, song title).

But i ran into a problem.  when I pressed OK to rename the file, I got an error message saying that the file could not be renamed.

All the files play properly, so MC still knows where they are.

Long story (a day and a half of troubleshooting) short, when I look at the tags of most of the files in the database, for the Filename tag I see the words "<can't be renamed>" instead of the filename.  I say "most" because a file I imported yesterday does not have that, it has the filename with path.

Two questions:

• how do I fix all the files in the database so that they can be renamed?
• what did I do to cause this to happen?  The reason I ask is that I do not want to do it again.

MC should never set the filenames to that.  If it happened somehow, you probably need to restore from a backup.  MC makes them automatically.

When I was building the playlist that I uploaded on Jan 18

    Let's Make A Playlist, Door #2: 60's and 70's, mostly rock (all vinyl)

I used the file renaming capability and it worked without a problem.

So this seems to have occurred quite recently.

OK, I did a restore from the Jan 21, 2022 backup.

Everything looks OK now.  The filename tag has the correct file and path for the files.

btw, I forgot to mention in my original post, I'm running MC 28.0.105 on Win10/64.

Any idea what might have caused that?
