DD Surround without Surround Receiver
« on: February 19, 2022, 02:02:01 am »

I have heard that with JRiver you can get home cinema sound without a surround receiver. JRiver solves this with its software.

My  search in the Wiki and Forum was not really successful. I'm probably using the wrong search terms.

I am looking for a Wiki entry or a thread where the procedure for surround sound is described, what needs to be considered and how to calibrate the channels with a microphone.

The wiki explains surround with a surround receiver. https://wiki.jriver.com/index.php/Surround_Sound
What I'm looking for is the way to surround without a receiver.

My home cinema is output via PC and 8-channel audio interface, and then distributed to a 5.2 setup. The audio interface works with ASIO driver.

I found the following on the wiki: https://wiki.jriver.com/index.php/Surround_Sound#Configure_Media_Center_to_pass_an_unaltered_digital_stream_to_the_soundcard_for_DVD
Is this the right link? Are there any other explanations?

What I'm still looking for is a how-to guide for calibrating the surround channels.

If you have an 8 channel interface then just connect them to your amps and play multichannel content, it will decode to pcm and output as normal with whatever DSP studio config you have. Calibration is a different question and not surround specific so not sure what you are asking on that point.

My question about working with surround for home cinema is about leveling and time delaying channels from each other.

https://wiki.jriver.com/index.php/Room_Correction#Distance for built in tools

Do you have a microphone?

Yes, I will get a calibrated microphone.

What test signals are recommended? It would be good to have a workflow that guides you through the measurement session.

I have now found information on the workflow for calibrating surround channels in the Wiki. https://wiki.jriver.com/index.php/Room_Correction#Distance

Is there any further information or experience?

Which is the best way to display the level of the microphone signal?

The simplest way is to use roomeqwizard, measure each channel then calculate the delays by comparing impulse peaks.
