unwanted messages when running media center

Hope someone can help me out with this one.
When I run media center I get messages from a messenger service once in a while. I have been ruling out all other possibilities and can only conclude that it is coming from media center. This is very anoying and I would like to get rid of it. Any suggestions??

I think you might be talking about XP's built in messenger service.

It was designed to allow system administrators to send messages. Unfortunately, it is now regularly used by spammers to hawk the usual porn and get rich quick schemes. The easiest way to get around it is to run a firewall like Zonealarm.

Believe me, mdeman, I'm the resident paranoid (I won't even install Media Player 9) and there is no such thing in Media Center. Synesthesiatic is probably right. The problem is that as soon as you've got the stuff on your computer no firewall will help you since it's not outside, but inside. Search for parts of the exact text of the message, and you'll probably find the way to get rid of it (usually to disable the messenger service). I had it on my Win2K Advanced Server and had to disable the service. You you don't need that anyway. If you have been to MP3 sites, those are the main culprit for that.

Sysnasthetic is right it is the XP Messenger service and the way to get rid of it is not to use a firewall but to disable the service. To do this go into the XP Services Manager which is in the Console (Start->Control Panel->Administrative Tasks->Services)  Find Messenegr Service in here and set it to disabled and no more messages...I turned this off a month ago and haven't seen anything since so I know it was this service and not MC...

I had this problem with Windows 2000 the first day i installed it. Before to put antivirus and firewall.
All the messages said that i had virusX on my machine, and....YES i had !
More kind of trojans sent by the very persons who sent me the messages.
Since the firewall working i did not get one.
You may as well install and run SpyBot to check what you got on your drive

To all people that responded. I must admit that I only have the providers firewall. Looking at the feedback I think I have a virus will check it out and install additional firewall.
