iTunes XML import crashes MC29 (and MC27) [Solved]
« on: April 01, 2022, 09:10:06 pm »

I just upgraded to MC29 from 27. I am trying to import my iTunes library. I save my full library as library.xml when I select that with the import feature in MC29 (or MC27) the program closes/crashes.

What am I doing wrong?

Sorry, I can't helpwith importing an iTunes library. However, I'd recommend importing your media files. I believe that's a cleaner solution for moving to MC

I did that already, but I have 300+ very specific playlists with my 6.5TB library that I would prefer not to have to recreate, or save and import one at a time.

If you want to send the file to matt at jriver I'll try it and see if I can find the problem.  Thanks.

Thanks for the file.  I ran it in the debugger.

I had to turn off the check for the files to exist.

But then it worked through the array and imported the files and playlists.

It took a long time and quite a bit of memory.  I have a fast computer and it took over an hour.

I was able to speed up one part of the import a little.  We were doing more work to get a number out of a string than we needed.

I'm on Windows, so it's not a 1:1 test.  But it looks like it's working.

255,117 files is quite a stress test!

Any other things I could try?

Thanks.

We're testing on Mac and see it crashing there.

Thanks,

Let me know when it's fixed. I am about to make the leap to a new Mac Studio, so iTunes is going *poof* and I will be stuck with the annoying Apple music, hence my trying to make the full switch to MC29.

I was an iTunes user for decades and made the switch to MC when Apple ditched it and came up with "Music". It was unbearable so I switched. It's a pretty long learning curve to get into MC but man is it worth it. There is just nothing even remotely close to what it can do. I don't regret the move for one second. My media had never been so well curated and organized as now and I am just very happy with it.
Good luck with it, you'll find very knowledgable and helpful people on this forum to help you when you need it.

Thanks, Hans,

I have been using Media Center since the 1st Mac version became available, but I have only used it as my library/player for my hi-res FLAC and ALAC files. My lossless (44.1/16) ALAC collection remained on iTunes. The only thing I will need to figure out is how to add my curated playlists and files to my iPhone 13 if I no longer use iTunes/Music.

I am a playlist fanatic.

That is a nice list, Paul
I have quite a few playlists, too. I am even more excited by the smart lists. I have almost completely switched to using them. It is amazing how I can assemble a list just to my liking by using the correct rules. This is where my extensive tagging comes in really handy. I remember the issue with ALAC files that wouldn't play anywhere else because of their DRM. I think there is a way getting rid of the DRM using iCloud match but I don't remember the details. It definitely is a pain. I eventually ditched them all and replaced them.

Have you tried 29.0.29 Matt linked yet?
The issue is fixed in there.

It worked fine for me on a M1. It will beachball until finished.

Of course I don't have your Media.
So maybe turn off Media Network in MC.
Turn on logging in MC. If you don't specify a file reset size you will be able to watch what MC is doing during the import.
Make sure no other apps are running.
Make sure where ever you media is, it's on a completely stable usb or network connection.
Open activity monitor and check to see where it's resources are bound up.

To watch the log as it's running the import, open a terminal window.
Once you start the import, in the terminal window type this:

Code: [Select]
tail -f ~/Library/Application\ Support/J\ River/Media\ Center\ 29/Log.txt
It should just keep spinning out tons of lines of info until it's finished.

Ok thanks. Right now I am on a late 2013 iMac. I will be switching to an M1 Pro Max Mac studio in a about a week, maybe I will wait until that machine to do the import/transfer.

Just a heads up. I let it run overnight, and it worked!!!!!

One last question...and perhaps this is a new question/thread. Now that I have my iTunes library mirrored in MC29, is there a way to keep it automatically synced? In other words, if I add a new playlist or six on iTunes to add to my phone. Is there a way, short of doing this big long scan that it will catch and update corrections?

Or can I add playlists and tracks to my iPhone 13 and abandon iTunes altogether?

I can't think of a way to automatically sync them using playlists unless you can limit the iTunes playlist export to a date range and you keep track of that.

MC can't sync to the iTunes database on your phone so you'll need to keep using iTunes for that.
