MC causing external drive to run
« on: April 12, 2022, 07:24:45 am »

When I open MC, I hear my external music drive spin-up and run as if being scanned.

If I am not asking MC to play a file on that drive (or looking in the Explorer node of MC's tree), why is MC accessing the drive rather than just reading the library database?

I prefer the drive remain asleep until actually accessed for a file or another such operation.

So is this normal and intended, or a 'bug'?

Auto-import enabled, perhaps?

Nope, just double-checked and it is still set to my initial settings of NO Auto-Import.

There seems to be some triggers for filesystem when from user point only library browsing should be enough.

One thing you can do yourself is to remove file existence check from bottom toolbar if you already haven't. Maybe you could even create expression to check only local files

I do not understand what to do here, but I do appreciate your input.

Oh, all my files reside on the removable hard drive, if that makes a difference.

If you right click bottom toolbar and click "Set Tex Rule" to see if you have file check there as a rule. You can paste the rule here if you can't understand the rule yourself. I don't have the default rule there any more so I don't remember what it looked like originally

found it. thanx

[Name] (FixCase([File Type], 3) - [Size] - [File Size]) If(IsMissing(), /(file not found/),)

I imagine I just delete that and I am done here, but if I am wrong I can always copy it back from here   ;D

You could try to remove " If(IsMissing(), /(file not found/),)" part and see if it makes difference. That is checking if the file is available on disk

Now that makes sense, I will give it a try.

Once drive sleeps I can check MC and see.

Thanks again   :)

That fact this this exists seems like a bad idea to me.

We're going to switch our defaults for the next build to remove file system checks.

Good to hear, been onboard since MC9 and never knew about that function on the lower toolbar.

So many goodies in MC must be impossible to know them all.

I think this is a good decision because of I'd guess many people have files on NAS which are set to sleep and also has an effect on performance on local files so thank you.

I wish some hunting could also be done to prevent MC trying to access on files in Standard View when just browsing. I'd guess something on screen refresh triggers some file access routine which then jams the UI for 10-60 seconds. It happens e.g. when right clicking file, entering search with mouse (I think it doesn't happen if keyboard shortcut ctrl-f is used) or switching to other tab with mouse. It is quite frustrating to wait up for a minute just to get GUI responsive again. My music files are local and on those view I haven't ever seen such jams.

Try turning this off:

Thanks for the tip. I had set that off already though. I also have set all my movie covers to local drive and almost all series episode images. That shouldn't matter though as thumbnails should be used generally which are also local.

After the initial wait there are no delays until again when some time has passed. I'd guess as some resource / connection has again been released or NAS disk have spun down.
