Change file location for all files due to new NAS?
« on: April 16, 2022, 03:54:12 am »

Hi,

I have exchanged my old network attached storage (NAS). This new unit has an new name: "xxxxx". Old file(s) location were:  \\READYNAS\media\Music\...... it is now: \\xxxxxx\media\Music\....

How shall I proceed to move or rename all files?

Best regards.

You could rename your new nas identically to your old one and JRiver would not even know anything changed. Every time I reinstall windows or something I just manually assign drive letters as they were on the previous install and everything "just works"

If you really want to rename the path, then run Import, either manually or automatically in background:
Tools > Import > Media-Import > Import a Single folder > Next... > select folder to search....
Options > Library & Folders > Auto Import > Configure Auto-import > Folders > ...   etc.

You may also want to update the path in:
Options > File Location > Audio (CD Rips & podcasts) > ...

Changing auto-import will allow new files to be imported correctly.

To change the library filename for existing files, select the files to be changed and use Library Tools - Rename, Move & Copy to do a find and replace of READYNAS with XXXXXX. Do a couple of files to be sure it is working correct before doing a big rename.

Depending on the number of files and whether you can live with the downtime I would change the import settings and just create a new library and reimport.

If not, then dtc's suggestion of the rename is the way to go.

Also re-importing to a new library loses all the data which was not saved to tags / sidecars. Probably eg play times, import dates and such

In all cases, the Rename, Move, and Copy Files tool is the correct solution.

You will want to use it in "UPDATE DATABASE" mode.  In this mode it only changes the internal pointers to your files.  It does NOT try to rename actual files.  This is very important.

You will also want to use the Find & Replace part of RM&C, down at the bottom of the box.  Then you can easily have it substitute "READYNAS" for "XXXXX".

RM&C is a great tool and it's designed for *exactly* this purpose.
