I always assumed 1 was best (as in #1 in the charts), but I was just showing a friend my system, and he thought it was the other way around - is there common agreement on this?

In that case 5 would be the highest points to give
And in that case would be best rated

By popular demand, I will change my ratings so that 5 is best.  Does MC9 have some sort of "search & replace" function for this?

I used to use 5 for the best (as in 5 stars), but then I changed to 1, for #1 hits.  But then I changed back to 5, for the simple reason that sorting by rating column could at least get all my #5s to the top of the list, whereas the #1s are always preceeded by all the empty rating fields.

You can use the global replace (File Properties Tools | Library Info | Find & Replace, select Rating in the left hand column, and enter the numbers in the right) but I wouldn't, because once you've replaced all your 1s with 5s, and 2s with 4s, how are you then going to change your OLD 5s for 1s?  I would just sort the entire database by the Rating Column, and manually select them by number.  That way you keep track of which are new and old numbers.  There may be an easier way...

Luckily I haven't bothered rating anything 4 or 5 (ie the two lowest ratings in my old scale), so find & replace will work fine for me!

select all songs
copy 'rating' field to another unused field, let say 'composer' for all

do a filter to display all songs such as 'composer'=1
select all them
set 'rating'=5 for the selection

do a filter to display all songs such as 'composer'=2
select all them
set 'rating'=4 for the selection

do a filter to display all songs such as 'composer'=4
select them
set 'rating'=2 for the selection

do a filter to display all songs such as 'composer'=5
select them
set 'rating'=1 for the selection
