As I reported a while back renamimg AVBISurf.ax when XP and DX9 are installed enabled MC to properly play the TV. I have installed ATI's MMC 8.1 which includes an updated surface allocator (AVBISurf.ax). The original problem is now back but now if you rename the file you will only have the TV working in MC until the next time you use the ATI application. At that time the ATI TV player will restore AVBISurf.ax. Can MC be forced to use the default DX9 surface allocator?

The issue is that ATI's surface allocator jumps in by itself, when we need neither it nor Microsoft's.

One possible solution for you is to turn on Closed Captioning in MC. This seems to load Microsoft's filter and prevents ATI's from being loaded.

O.K. that does work so there must be a way to code around this. Why not eneable closed captioning long enough to start the TV in MC and then disable it once the TV is started?

It also appears that timeshifting is broken in anything above 9.0.124. I have reverted back to MC 9.0.124 and MMC 7.7.0.1 until this is sorted out in MC.

Can you be more specific on this? What do you get when you try starting time-shifting?

I just installed 9.0.127 again. When watching TV I select 'start timeshifting' then 'pause'. MC attempts to pause but then immediately reverts back to live TV and exits timeshifting mode. As I said it works fine with 9.0.124 or below. Also the media keys on my MS internet keyboard pro do not work. With .124 and below just hitting the pause key on the keyboard worked. MC no longer responds to this.

I have a workaround for TV in MC with MMC 8.1 installed. I removed all references to AVBISurf.ax in the registry. I did not rename AVBISurf.ax. I started MMC 8.1 and it works. Shut it down and started MC, started TV in MC and it works. Now if you can just look into the timeshifting issue.

For the benefit of others who may have the same problem, I suggest unregistering the file AVBISurf.ax rather than renaming it, or editing the registry. To unregister it, run this command (Start->Run)

regsvr32 /u "C:\Program Files\ATI Multimedia\TV\AVBISurf.ax"

Now, regarding time-shifting, are you sure its not the same issue caused by AVBISurf.ax? There has been hardly any changes in time-shifting code in MC from 124 to 127.

No, the timeshifting issue is not related to AVBISurf. Using .124 it is O.K. installing .126 or .127 and timeshifting behaves as I indicated above. It does not matter which AVBISurf.ax is present on the system (MMC 7.0.0.1 or 8.1) the problem is there with .126 or .127. I don't have .125 so I can't tell you for sure that it also has the problem. Reverting back to .124 makes timeshifting work again.

If I switch the TV to windowed mode I can do timeshifting. Switch back to internal and timeshifting does not work. This is with MC 9.0.127

If you notice the post after that,  that I copied and pasted from the same place, that I said "Very interesting" .

Not because the gentleman said it was not DX 9, but the "Order" that he did the install.
ATI finally posted a statement to this.

Timeshifting does work. I think it is more of a control problem. If I right click and select Play/Pause I get odd behavior. Sometimes it starts playing from the start of the Media Library and other times it just reverts back to live TV. If I use the MC Pause button then Timeshifting works fine.

I have an AIW 8500 128meg. I think for PIP you need two tuners. I downloaded 8.1 from ATI, no ATI DVD. I might order the CD but I don't really need the ATI DVD player since I use WinDVD 4. I think the new MMC has a noticeably better picture. Recording seems to be better. AVI recording still has some audio sync issues. But overall an improvement.
