Media Library without Playlist entries + Sorting
« on: March 10, 2003, 12:01:17 pm »

I'm using 9.0.124 and like previous versions I'm very frustrated with how difficult it is to do two simple and I would think, very common tasks.

1) How can I get the listings when selecting the Media Library, to not show entries from any playlists. I think it's extremely irritating and redundant. Why would anyone want to see playlist entries here. That's what the Playlist folder (tab, node? what do you call those things)  is for.  ?

2) Try as I might, I can't seem to get a simple sort as default in the Media Library tab. The sort should be Artist, Album, Track#  so that all albums can play just like they would on the CD.  >:(

1) You can't. A playlist is nothing more than a group of pointers to the actual files which are in the Media Library.

The purpose of the Media Library is to be able to view and sort all media files, not just ones that aren't part of a playlist. By being able to view all of my media files in the Media Library, I can add any of them to as many playlists as I want without having to have multiple copies of the files.

2)Tools/Options/Tree & View Settings on the right side under the Sorting heading.

That doesn't make sense to me. All of your media files would still be in the Library listing. You can still accomplish your goal of easily adding files to playlists - you don't need the entries in the playlist also listed (redundantly) in the library listing.  By analogy, a real world library (with books and such) doesn't list card catalog entries in the card catalog. Nor are catalog entries put on the shelf. They're too separate things.

How would all files still be in the Library listing if when they are added to a playlist you don't see them in the Media Library any longer (as described in your first post)?

In the first part of your statement you said that all files would still be in the Library listing, but here you're saying that having them listed in both the library and playlists is redundant. This seem contradictory...to me, anyway.

? I guess I don't really understand your reasoning. Why wouldn't you want to be able to click on the Media Library and see a list of all your files, irrespective where they are located on your hardrive or what playlist(s) they belong to?

The Media Library is an all-encompassing card catalog. It contains a card for every file that is in your library. A playlist isn't creating a duplicate of a specific card, it is just a list of references to many cards. Adding references to the playlist doesn't remove the original cards from the all-encompassing catalog.

Rob,

I think he means he doesn't want to see the actual playlist files themselves in the library...

Although I am not sure you do anyway...  dunno as I do not use playlists very often

I'm sorry for not explaining myself well. I'll try again.

When clicking on the Media Library icon the list contains double entrys for some every song I have in a playlist and on my hard drive. (I imported my mp3 files and my previously built playlists).

Both entries point to the same mp3 file on my harddrive.  The only difference between the two entries is that one comes from a playlist (as shown by the path under the file properties.

I don't want nor need to see both the playlist reference to a specific MP3 file and the entry for the file itself. I would like to NOT see the listing from the playlist entry.  This is because I don't have every song in a playlist and some songs are in more than one playlist. But I want every MP3 file on my hard drive listed (and only listed once) when selecting media library.

Every other jukebox I've used (my favorite was Sonic Foundry Siren - but they've stopped upgrading and supporting that one) keeps listings from playlists and listings from files imported separate.

Does that explain it?

Cool. It just wasn't clear to me from your other posts that you were seeing double entries or that you were referring to playlists that were imported in to MC. You should've mentioned that. :) I thought you were talking about something completely different.

Anyway, hopefully someone who has dealt with this issue can offer some suggestions. I've never imported any playlists so I'm not really familiar with MCs behaviour in this regard.

edit:

Just now as a test, I used Winamp to create a playlist and saved it in my Media Library directory and then set Import Media Files in MC to include .m3u files, and it failed to import the playlist. So, how did you get MC to import the playlists? I'm using 9.0.120.

So the problem definitely appears to be an issue with imported playlists. That seems broken to me. Imported playlists shouldn't add entries into the Media Library (especially if the file is already listed there).  so I cleared my library and did not import the playlists. No big loss, but I'm glad I didn't put a lot of work into them.

I don't see a "Sorting" heading in this dialog.  I see the list of attributes (FileName, Artist, etc.); some toggles like Auto Expand Tree; buttons for Toolbar, Font, Thumbnails; and that's it.  The help system provides the same advice.  Maybe this is a bug in 9.0.124?

I'm still using 9.0.120. It's possible they've changed the dialog or moved it in newer versions.

edit:

I forgot, they've implemented sticky views, which changes the old way of sorting. This link has a brief explanation that might help:
