i'm am trying to download anything from your server. hence the statements, "connection to your server problem" and,  "i  cannot download anything". i didn't know that it would be important what i was trying to download (skins), but that i cannot connect to your server. my previous post mentioned that MC would not connect to check for updates, and was mostly ignored, but was recent enough that i thought i could refer to it.

i don't know what more help you might need. i cannot connect to your server when MC starts up, ("reason: unknown") and i cannot connect to your server when i try to download a skin ("reason: unknown"); i was looking for this hairstyle thing, since i don't see a change with the new beta...

what more help do you need? my system info again?

KingSparta doesn't work for JRiver.  He's volunteering to help.

Connection problems are sometimes due to a firewall or proxy configuration problem.

Can you get to the plug-ins pages when you use IE?
Can you download any plug-ins?

Make sure you're choosing V9 plug-ins.

There are no Hairstyle skins on our web pages yet.

Try hitting F11 or Ctrl-W to switch, once you have started playing something with a display screen.

There's more in the instructions thread above.

thanks jim; i'm able to see your pages in IE6 and Netscape and Netcaptor. I'm able to connect to any other site IP i attempt. when i open MC and it checks for updates, or i ask it to check for updates, the JRReader prompt tells me, "unable to connect to a server. Reason: unknown". I get the same exact prompt when i'm at your site, but only when i attempt to download a new skin do i get the error.

i use a firewall, but all else works properly and your software is specifically "allowed' to connect outside. i have no proxy configurations that i'm aware of. I'm on a dsl line and, again, have no problems connecting with anything i want to save the ability to DL from your servers.

suppose i'll uninstall and reinstall. darn i hate to do that.. BTW, when hit F11 i get a full screen mode but only black with your logo. no graphics. (i have "no skin" selected at the moment - perhaps this is why i cannot see the hairstyle??? i'll check it...)

thanks for your help.

We have had more than a few reports from people with similar problems who had to uninstall the firewall to get it to work.  In other words, letting Media Center through was not enough.  Neither was "disabling" the firewall.  It took an uninstall.  Zonealarm, certainly.  Maybe others.

was this within recent MC releases? once upon a time i was able to connect. hmmm...

i remember there being a problem with Norton's AV stuff and CDDB connectivity with various softwares. wonder if it's a distant cousin or something...

darn. what to do... what to do...

thanks
