Laptop only has 60hz - Anyway of adding 23.976, 50Hz etc?
« on: October 17, 2022, 03:49:40 am »

I've got a new wiz bang Lenovo X1 Yoga with a 400Nits HDR OLED 3840 x 2400 screen..... but Windows and the Intel GPU Utility only offer 60Hz.  No probs I thought and hit up CRU to create refresh rates at 23.976, and 50Hz but no joy (I just get a black screen when switching to these refresh rates).  There are a ton of Timing params and I've not tried them all, but does anyone have experience with getting various refresh rates on a Laptops internal display .... or is it really "stuck" at 60hz?
Thanks
Nathan

AFAIK this requires hardware support, so it may be stuck at 60Hz.
Anyway, try 48Hz and 72Hz, it may be supported. Or 47.952/71.928 (23.976 multiples).

This is the answer.

Having said that, you have an OLED, and OLEDs are 'weird' with 24fps motion due to the way the pixels 'refresh'.
Some people such as myself are very into film and do like the look but many people notice judder / 24fps weirdness. You can use JRVR or MadVR to do pulldown, it might not look terrible and in some situations depending on your sensitivity, you may prefer it to straight 24fps on an OLED. Targeting 60hz is of course not ideal because it requires pulldown, but that's the ceiling we have to work with here. I've gone on at length in another thread about using 119hz / 120hz for 24fps content on OLEDs doing 5x frame repetition with BFI.

I tried a few timing combo's with 48 / 47.956hz  without luck (including copy the timing from the working 60hz).... though there are a still a bunch of timing options (and manual as well).
