I may have narrowed down that elusive "stream read error".  After many successful syncs to my iPod last night without a hitch, I got that error again.  This time when I clicked on the iPod, rather than left-cliking, I just right-clicked on it WITHOUT highlighting first.  I got the error and muttered some colorful language in preparation for a full restore and reformat.  Could this "right-click" be part of the problem?  Who knows?  Don't remember exactly what introduced the error in the past, but it could have been this.

This may have been more of a coincidence than it was an identification of what is causing this error, but am posting just in case.  Perhaps one of the developers will see this post and try to reproduce.
