Hey there everyone. Just got a new Synology NAS running DSM 7.1. Any suggestions for the best way to set it up would be greatly appreciated.

The silence here reflects the fact that your query is a bit thin on information. "Setting up" a Synology NAS is not within the purview of this board. So some questions are:

- Are you planning to run MC on the NAS (in docker)?
- Are you just keeping your media files on the Synology and want MC to access them from there?

Without knowing these things it is impossible to help.

Sorry about that.

What I'm looking for is the best way to sort it all out, the NAS is a 4 bay ds920+ raid 5. My primary access point is in my media room for a/v use (macmini m2pro). I'd also like to access it from my laptop in my office (macbook air 2017). The NAS is also accessible from the internet so I'd like to access it when I travel. I don't know what "docker" is. I've been using MC since MC21 and it's been getting wonky so i'm erasing all of my old library's and installs and starting fresh. The system has plenty of power available so performance is my focus.

OK, so it looks like you are running MC on the Mac Mini an want to have your media files on the NAS. That's relatively easy. Once the media file structure is created on the NAS you can mount the top most folder (containing all media files, in my case Volume1/music/) using SMB/CIFS.
Make sure you give the user accessing this folder the appropriate privileges on the NAS.
Then you point MC to the mounted folder under the [Rename, Copy & Move Files] menu (F6) - top left input area. Since you want to rebuild your library, you just import the entire structure. I would keep a most recent back-up of the current library, just in case.
That should be it.

I have a related question. I just setup a Mac Studio it will replace the PC's I have always used as my Media servers.  I have about 9 TB of media files I have accumulated over the years. They are all in NTFS. Mac Ventura will not read, or covert these to APFS. Nothing new here.  I understand that an NAS takes care of that issue.

The NAS certainly has a different format, neither NTFS nor APFS (mine is on BTRFS) but after you transfer the data to the NAS you can access them from pretty much any system using SMB

I've been meaning to reply to this thread ever since seeing it. I'm speaking from personal experience here so take what I have to say with a grain of salt because YMMV. I saw other people say similar things to what I'm about to say and part of me wishes I had heeded their advice. I have a very powerful Synology DS1621xs+ with 64 GB of RAM, 1.5 TB of SSD caching, 14 TB of SSD storage, an updated network add-in, a dedicated network switch, and updated fans, and I've also poured countless hours into configuring my NAS to be compatible with JRiver (and Roon). I would strongly advise against using your NAS for this purpose. The best approach in my experience is to use your NAS as an active backup instead and store your music locally. Amongst other problems, the main issue for me was that my Synology Drive Client sync to my computer wasn't compatible with my backup to my "permanent" cloud due to some compatibility issues that arose from converting SMB to AFS that were minor in scope but that created huge problems. Just my two cents.

Hello I am a DSM 920+ user.

I have been very successful in using the JR Media with my NAS.

You need to store all your music files on your NAS. When that's done, simply import your music files by going to Tools menu in JRM and using the Import Tool which you will have configure and to point to the location where your files are and presto you are done. Every time you add files to you NAS do another import and it will update your JRM library.
