Tagging errors [Solved]
« on: February 22, 2023, 02:58:35 pm »

Since this late afternoon MC is producing always tagging errors. Restart or reboot does not help.

If I use Remove, Move & copy files sometime the error message occurs "Media Center encountered errors while tagging or moving files. Check that the files exist, are not read-only, and are not in use by other programs",

Sometimes no error message appears  - in MC the new filename path looks OK  but windows explorer shows different files than MC in the file path.

See attached picture: The title is OK and the Name should be the same  - but they are not!

Changing something in the meta data to move the files again - works after a few tries. It feels really unsafe.

Any Idea?

1. Remark: I have copied the folder to my other PC, imported the files, and applied Remove, Move & copy.  It works. Correct Result. Really strange.

Check your disks.
Done!  - No Errors so far.

The only thing what causes my attention. It's an Samsung 870 2 TB SATA SSD and  I had no free SATA ports anymore on the mainboard - so I put the ssd in an external usb-enclosure and connected the ssd through USB-A 3.2 Gen 1 to the mainboard (Asus MB has a USB-A port on the MB.). Is that reliable? Mmmh!

I had yesterday evening the same problem again. Remove, Move & copy moved the folder but did not write the files as it should. Doing it this morning it works. I really am puzzled  ?

I once had a system that had been stable for years begin misbehaving in very strange ways with crashes and disk errors.

I tried everything including hardware diagnostics, reseating memory, swapping drives, etc.

On a whim I updated the SSD firmware and my system became stable again.

Apparently some Windows update introduced an incompatibility with an SSD that had been fine for years.

I don't think so because it happens on two different computers.

What I have seen multiple times now - is the following: Remove, Move & copy files : Base Path D:\Audio\Classical\ -  Filename: \[Album]\[Track #] - [Name]

1. Remove, Move & copy files moves the folder, but does not write the new filenames according to the specified rule in Remove, Move & copy files.
2. In the database the specified files (new file name) show up in the filename (path) field - what is wrong  - locate on disk (external) gives an error message.
2. After 10 min or longer MC recognizes (worker module) in the background that something is wrong and the old file names appear in the database again.
3. Applying Remove, Move & copy files again renames the files correctly.

It's Rename, Move & Copy.

Isn't this a second write problem with your new USB drive?

When you use that tool, there can be a _lot_ of disk activity.  It's only as fast as the drive and connection.

Try fewer files.

Also, this name:
\[Album]\[Track #] - [Name]

Do you mean to have this name?
[Album]\[Track #] - [Name]  (no preceding back slash)

Test to see if that works for 1 or 2 files.

yes

I have tested 20 single tracks yesterday. They all worked. For multiple tracks the problem still is there- but not for each Album. It's sometimes. I usually move a single Album as part of my library reorganisation project. In 2021 I had done this for modern (pop, jazz etc.) music. I had no problems. End of 2022 I did that for opera albums - no issues (same ssd). 60 Albums left. I had moved ~400 Album's during the last week's and it had happen 20-40 time's.

I will test next week if it is the USB interface (put the ssd off the external enclosure and connect it via SATA in my other computer, but it will take some time).

Could it be, that the USB interface is powered down by the OS? (Energy plan configured in Win10 is maximum performance)

If USB is the source of the problem, it is possible that it's a power problem.  I had a problem like that once with a Raspberry Pi.  It didn't have enough power for the USB drive, and it would crash.  Swapping the RPi power supply for a bigger one fixed it.

Try doing more files, but not all of them, just to see if you can determine what works and what doesn't.

What i did:
1. Remove the USB SSD enclosure and put the SSD in my workstation connected through SATA instead of USB. Problem was the same.- > USB interface is not the root cause.
2. Backup MCLib. Copy the audio files to a different disk. Run checkdsk, run Samsung Magician drive test tools. No Error! Latest Firmware. Drive is Ok!
3. Reformatting the SSD with Blocksize 2MB, NTFS. Recopy the audio files to the SSD. Restore MC Lib. Run Import.

Then the following happens. I got  ~7000 duplicates entries in the lib out of ~16 000 files. Like the following (Screenshots):
There are only a very few fields which have different entries.
I.) How to get rid of that in a very efficient way?
II.) How do I avoid that this inconsistency happens again? -! Data Integrity should always be ensured! At any price!

Back to the original problem:
Albums with no duplicate entries I could move without any issues. I did ~20 Albums.

Those appear to be different files.

Duplicates can happen if you're importing from two locations with the same files.  Look at the File Location tags.

File location is the same. D:\Audio\Classical or D:\Audio\Jazz. it's the  same file. I have checked that, locate on disk (external)
I think that the Lib (database) and the tag's in the file are differrent; e.g. I have introduce Record Lablel. It alway's appear in the old version.
The folowing fields in the duplicates have different value:
Skip Count
Last Played
Last Skipped
Bookmark
-----------------------
Date First Rated
Date Imported
-----------------------
Record Label (User Defined Field)
Total Track's

I got it:

1. Removed the old duplicates (on this I could not do Update Tag's from library) -> That's the reason from my PoV why Rename, Move & copy files failed sometimes. I only moved classical music which had only a fraction of duplicates compared to modern music.
2. The duplicates were not visible in the past.

Everything works now - so far. :)
