Media Center 9.0.120 beta is available.

Many things will crash and not work. If that worries you, please wait for a couple of weeks.

Changes

1. Changed: Many speed optimizations -- large libraries work much smoother than with previous builds.
2. Changed: Column auto-sizing much faster -- even with very large lists (100,000+ files). (but more of an approximation with large lists)
3. Changed: "Analayze Audio" would take a long time to show and to start with a lot of files in the list.
4. Fixed: MC would not save its database if it was started with no .jmd files.
5. Fixed: MC would update its right-view twice on startup -- causing an unnecessary slowdown.
6. Fixed: MC would show the "Party Mode" dialog after connecting to a Media Server.
7. Changed: Slightly improved import speed with large libraries.
8. Fixed: MJAutomation IMAGEFILE_IN_DATABASE would add a bogus path in front of the return string "INTERNAL".
9. Changed: The order of tracks burned on audio CD's is the order they appear in the track list (not the sequence number order).
10. Fixed: Ogg files would not play through Media Server.
11. Changed: Playing Now no longer accepts files that are "Data" or "Unknown" media type.
12. Fixed: Files dragged to the left tree from Explorer (or other external source) would be automatically imported.
13. Changed: "In Queue" files use different icon than regular files.
14. Fixed: Slideshow updated for version 9. (must redownload from version 9 page)

The speed of a search in build 120 is difficult to grasp. With my nearly 15,000 mp3 files it could take perhaps 20 seconds before where now it does it in 4 or 5 seconds.

Still, when burning a compilation CD artists and albums are still listed as various. I sure wish that could be corrected. I've posted this problem 3 or 4 times before but never see a comment regarding it.

Can anyone respond to this, please?

Same problem as the last 3 or so builds... NO MEDIA EDITOR.

It crashes every time I attempt to load it, with an error msg about a prob with media editor.exe.

I know you guys are overloaded with fixes, however I was really hoping that the following problem was going to be fixed on this build and found myself very disappointed when it wasn't :-/

The continuous play does not work for video (mpg) files.
This has not been working for several versions. Any plans to fix this soon? ?
I have a large collection of music videos I enjoy playing with MC and find it annoying to have to click play for every video file. I using MC in Windows XP on a laptop.

I would think this would be a high priority thing, wouldn't it?

I was told the last version that had this function working was 9.0.115, however, I never downloaded that version and it looks like it's not available on your FTP site anymore.

While ripping "Best of the Doobies" to mpc format, program hangs about 2/3 of the way through copying the first track to wav format. Cancel then close riping window causes MC to crash (not W2K).

Please could there be a way to change what filter MC is using for DVD? I still cannt playback DVD successfully. The filter MC is using is Ravisent Cinemaster... I don't what program installed this but it is awful quality...

Re: ripping a cd to mpc, I switched to using the external encoder and was able to rip to mp+ format. Perhaps this is a problem with MC's internal mpc encoder. BTW, in both cases, I was using the '-xtreme' parameter.

BUG: File->Library->Search for media servers with none available causes library to return to default and throws away all other libraries!

BUG?: The following smartlist only returns 1 file that is the only track I have for that album. I would have expected to get ~120MB of music with no 2 tracks from the same album.

I tried to enter KingSparta's published media server in the Library Manager and the load it. It failed to connect and then proceeds to tell me that:

"Media Center failed to load any library. This is a critical error, and the program must stop running. Please re-install the latest version."

This now occurs every time I try and start MediaCenter!

Reinstalling did NOT fix the situation.

BTW: I don't use the default library location. I created a new library called Music pointing to a networked drive on my machine, then deleted the Default library.

Edit: Uninstalling, deleting all the JRiver keys under HKLM and HKCU (which were still there even though I told the uninstaller to remove all registry entries), then re-installing did fix the problem.

When playing files via ASIO on my home computer, it cuts off early by about 5 seconds. Kinda like that bug a few versions back, but it only does it for ASIO. When I switch to Directsound it plays the whole song rather cutting off abruptly.

Oh, and ASIO still doesn't work for my Echo Indigo PCMCIA card. All the details are in a few of the past few builds bug reports, and besides, I'm sure I'll have to post againabout it in the next build thread.

CD Auto insert notification is getting better (whether you changed something or not.

After ripping a cd, and inserting the next, MC no longer crashes. (yay!) However, it does look like it looks up the cd from YADB twice, and then mixes up the order of the tracks. Pressing F5 to refresh the track list fixes everything. However, when I attempt to rip the cd, I get this dialog:

Failed to get Track Info:
The device name is already being used as an alias by this application. Use a unique alias.
Would you like to keep trying further tracks?
<yes> <no>

Choosing yes lands me in the same spot for each track on the cd. Choosing no sends me back to MC, however, to rip the cd, I need to close out MC and restart. When I close MC, I get a windows error claiming that Media Core has a fatal error and to notify MS of the problem.

Even holding down shift to disable Windows auto insert notification leads to the same problem - MC doing auto insert twice.

Still not able to rip (encode portion) using the MP3 plugin to a UNC path location on .120 - Ripping to a local or even a network mapped drive is fine. Ripping to the UNC path is not. This used to work on .113

1)Clicking a *.rm link downloads the file instead of streaming it. If I cut and paste the link in to "Open URL of streaming file" dialog box, the file streams fine.

Clicking on a *.ram link does nothing. Again, if I cut and paste it into "Open URL of streaming file" dialog box, the file streams fine.

BOTH file types are registered under MC9 in IE Folder options.

2)Direct Sound only outputs to the front two channels bypassing the Audigy Surround Sound and digital effects software. If I attempt to use the MC9 DSP effects and JRSS, it does map to all of my 4 channels, but sounds like crap -- lots of crackling.

3)ASIO crashes about a minute into an internet audio stream (MP3 web radio), or if you click on another link while playing a stream.

I just did a "find & replace" on the filename of 1800 files after moving them across to a file server and now MC is attempting to actually move each file and asking me for individual file replacement confirmations!!! Since when does a "find & replace" operation on the filename database field cause physical move? A new "feature"?

Oh, and answering "NO" causes the changes to revert. The only way to keep the library change without moving the file is to kill MC and hope the library doesn't get corrupted.

My mjextman.exe doesn't show any reaction anymore. When I delete it and install the newest version of MC9(120) it doesn't even bring any mjextman.exe with it. I need that file for being able to start playlists with my remote.

The Icons in the tree rooting in "My Computer" look strangely dark, as if somehow "zoomed" or something. They seem to not really fit into the rest of the icons.

Wish: It still would be great if the Sleep timer plugin could also be used as an alarm clock to also wake you up again in the morning!

Ok - something interesting. I burned an audio cd last night, and I got a dialog that warned me of the evils of cd auto insert notification and asked me to disable it. So I did - rebooted, and tried the above, and guess what? Things work normally. So, the key is to disable cd insert notification for now - any chance this will be resolved in the future? Any chance this dialog could be presented to the user during installation?

Memo Field Text Entry: 9.0.119 Text field is not given focus when the window opens
Keywords: 9.0.119 Cannot reproduce "Keywords" behaviour on any other field.
Keywords: 9.0.119 Keywords entered as "hello; goodbye" are treated as "hello" and " goodbye". Note the leading space on " goodbye".
Keywords: 9.0.119 Clicking on a keywords-only view scheme, does not add the rule "-keywords=[]" (ie: not empty keywords).
Keywords: 9.0.119 The rule "-keywords=[]" returns everything in the DB, including tracks with keywords. "keywords=[]" returns nothing.
Keywords: 9.0.119 When using the wizard to search by keywords, none are listed individually and things like "war; freedom; sixties" are shown as an option, as opposed to "war", "freedom" and "sixties".
Rename / Keywords: 9.0.119 Renaming keywords in the tree has the effect of adding the renamed keyword to the list with the old keyword still intact.
Rename: 9.0.119 When renaming in the tree, any semi-colons are ignored. Renaming something to "test; hi" results in "test hi" being saved.
Duration Field: 9.0.119 Duration is stored as a string and not a value. This means that all sorts, searches etc. are performed stringwise and not according to values. "duration=<60" won't work.
Duration Field: 9.0.119 Duration shows the number of seconds. Is it not possible to have a minute:second display?
Smartlists: 9.0.119 I have a smartlist with the following in it: "Limit: 120 minutes". When I click on the playlist, right click and choose play, the list is recalculated and another 2 hours of music is played instead of playing what is visible.
Playback Filter / Smartlists: 9.0.119 A playback filter that is based on a smartlist is not refreshed after each song. Eg: a filter based on "[Last Played]=<120" won't work because the filtered tracks are never updated.
Visualisation Studio: 9.0.119 When editing text elements, the new text is only saved when other properties of the element are changed before moving to another element in the visualisation.
Visualisation Studio: 9.0.119 None of the custom fields work in the display.
Visualisation Studio: 9.0.119 Any custom visualisations that are placed directly in the "Visualisations" folder will cause MC to crash on displaying them.
Visualisation Studio: 9.0.119 It is impossible to change the visualisation if MC is not playing anything.
Top Hits / Recently Played: 9.0.119 Properties for "Top Hits" and "Recently Played" are no longer there.
Auto Album Analyser: 9.0.119 Albums that have many artists, but are split into multiple directories, are listed under "Single Artist (incomplete)".
Auto Album Analyser: 9.0.119 Single tracks and tracks with no album specified are listed under "Single artist (incomplete)". A large amount are actually from multiple artist CD's. Consider having a "Single Tracks" entry?
Audio Analyser: 9.0.119 Has "Media Jukebox" in dialog.
Audio Analyser / Library Change: 9.0.119 Changing the current library while analysing audio causes MC to crash.
Audio Analyser: 9.0.119 Memory leak still present.
Library: 9.0.119 When switching libraries, the target quick drop retains its setting from the previously loaded library -- even if the target is invalid.
Dates / Times: 9.0.119 Inconsistently reported: Date created: "dd/mm/yyyy hh:mm:ss"; Date Modified: seconds since UNIX epoch; Duration: Seconds; Date Imported & Last Played: "xx days, yy hours ago". Please standardise these!
Ripping: 9.0.119 Only the "original" fields are copied from the CD information to the ripped files. New information such as [Composer], [Keywords] etc. are not copied. It is useful to have this all entered before the album is ripped so that the files can be named properly.
Keyboard Navigation: 9.0.119 Tab eventually ends up as a cycle between the tree on the left and the search bar when viewing playlists or media library, and between tree and tracks when in playing now.
Media Zones: 9.0.119 With Direct Sound (I have a SB Live! Value) selected, selecting Front channels play on all speakers. Selecting Rear plays only on rear. This is not always consistent and occasionally rear and front can play on all... ?
Playing Now: 9.0.119 Playing now does not preserve current playlist between sessions.
Playing Now: 9.0.119 When playing now is empty, selecting a single track to play displays the message: "Please select tracks to play."

When I go to tools, options, general and choose clear "Recently Imported" playlist on exit, the recently imported playlist remains upon re-starting MC.

MC9 still tries to reload ASIOMME.DLL when loading an mp3 from explorer.
http://www.kexp.org/listen/kexp-mp3-96k.pls MP3 stream still sounds glitchy and unlistenable like a bad MP3 encode.

I just burned an audio CD with the settings indicated by my system information listed below. After the preparing to write phase and on the second track of the write phase, I received the following message.

Media Center has detected a new CD in drive D: but can't get the correct volume information. Please try ejecting and reinserting the CD.

The CD Burning Progress screen continued to show write progress.

Bottom pane showed change of status from "Ready" to "Disk not writable".

I let the burning process finish and the CD was written correctly and all tracks play just fine.

- The slider in File Properties (state docked or not, doesn't matter) flickers between skinned and windows standard when dragged or clicked
- Media Center is named Media Jukebox in Task Manager - Processes
- View Scheme doesn't work with Date Imported. Shows the different date in the tree, but nothing under each item (search panel shows: [Date Imported]=[16 days, 10 hours ago]...perhaps it should convert to a date?). With grouping, it only shows 0-9...
- Can't copy/paste correctly in Search panel (copy an item and try to paste it into another smartlist)

Converting an APE file to MP3 VBR using Lame external encoder set at --alt-preset extreme repeatedly crashes MC 120. This happens both with large (500-1000) queues and single files.

File appears to decode, but MC craters when attempting to access Lame. On reopening MC, the file appears in its original APE format.

This was not present in 119, where I successfully transcode @2000 APE files with the external encoder.

Bugs for Media Center ver. 9.0.120 beta

When MC tries to display thumbnails for Quicktime files (which it apparently can't do), it hangs for a minute before allowing me to do anything.
Playlists : MC doesn't allow me to drag a playlist into a group unless Content View is currently displaying the contents of A playlist. It doesn't have to be the one I'm dragging, it just can't be in Playing Now or Media Library etc.
CD Burning : MC is still asking me if I want to burn a Data or Audio CD when I add a data only folder from My Computer within MC.
CD Burning : When I drag a folder from MC's My Computer to the CD Burning pane, MC goes through the "Updating Database" bit. Why?
Search : I'm using the criteria "folder=\Complete Albums" as a search criteria and MC is seperating the "Complete" and "Albums" portions, so that if I click on "Folder : \Complete Albums" and choose Remove, "Albums" is left behind. The same happens if I try to Edit by Typing. Not sure to what other keywords this is happening with.
My Computer : Renaming a folder in My Computer changes the paths for files residing in subfolders of that folder incorrectly. For instance :

I have files with a pathname of ...My Music\Complete Albums\Metallica\Master of Puppets\ARTIST - NAME.mp3.
Changing the name of the folder Complete Albums to just Albums results in files with pathnames of ...My Music\Albums\ARTIST - NAME.mp3.
but the files still physically reside in ...My Music\Albums\Metallica\Master of Puppets\ARTIST - NAME.mp3.
Playing Now : If I re-sort Playing Now by clicking on one of the headers, then choose Update Playback Order while the currently playing file is not the first on in the list, then Playing Now forgets which file is playing (even though it's still playing) and the Next button ceases to work. If I click Previous, then playback begins at the first file.
mini-me : Playlist Scrollbars now scroll playlists, but the thumb button jumps around like mad while you're scrolling. (Most evident when using a skin that uses an actual thumb button instead of a scroll bar)
mini-me : If you move mini-me to the lower part of your screen, right click it (it works better if the skin is low enough on the screen that the menu opens upwards), then click somewhere on the skin, but away from the menu, mini-me moves. Sometimes it moves far enough away that it is no longer seen. It seems to be bound to the mouse in some way. You can move the mouse around without holding down the mouse button, and mini-me moves with it.
Playing Now : TrackInfo Templates that use the visualiztion control crash MC.
Search : Picking the Full Albums Search modifier should be a toggle menu rather than just an add-only option. Choosing Full Albums more than once results in multiple Full Album criteria being added to the search bar.
Search : There appears to be no way of adding "and" & "or" to a search unless you edit by typing. There should be an easy-to-use method of piecing together a long search criteria ie. (replaygain==0 or peaklevel==0 or bpm==0 or intensity==0) using the Wizard.
Search : Removing a term from a search criteria (like right clicking and choosing Remove on "intensity=0" in mediatype=[audio] (replaygain==0 or peaklevel==0 or bpm==0 or intensity==0) results in mediatype=[audio] (replaygain==0 or peaklevel==0 or bpm==0 or) (notice the trailing "or".
Search : None of the various Date related search items can be found in the wizard (except for some roundabout way of getting there through the Add Keywords menu and then clickout off of the search bar and then back onto the search term).
Search : Date related search items are using a nearly impossible to understand format based on seconds in order to specify criteria.
Search : The Sorting dialog box offers no indication of what I'm allowed to type. If I type in the name of a valid field, then it works fine, but wouldn't it be better to provide a list of valid fields to choose from? As it is, I can seemingly type in anything with no guarantee it's going to accomplish anything. Also, there is no indication of what kind of sorting modifiers are available or what they do (ie what does "-d" mean?) Wouldn't it be better to provide a multi-tiered box that lets you choose a column from a dropdown, and then another and another to allow sorting by multiple fields?
Search : Selecting a Search Criteria, then choosing Edit by Typing results in a very difficult to read selection like this:
If you right click on the very end of the list of columns (provided your columns don't make the content view scroll to the left and you have a blank column at the end) to add a column, that column gets added at the very beginning instead of the very end.
Playing Now : Moving the column with the playing icon in it to another position takes the playing icon along with it.

Playing Now : Deleting the currently playing file from Playing Now stops playback. Clicking Play results in an error message that says "Please select file(s) to play." Double clicking another file in Playing Now will restart playback.
View Scheme Groups : Using the wizard to create search criteria for a view scheme isn't filtering out things based on the criteria specified for the group that the view scheme is in. For instance, creating a View Scheme in the Audio Group, if I try to specify a genre in the search criteria, I'm being presented with genres that only belong to images or videos, etc.
Search : If you choose a Search Criteria, then choose Edit by Typing, and hit Ctrl-C to copy and go to a different smartlist and hit Ctrl-V to paste, the entire list of Search Criteria is copied instead of just the one you wanted.
Playlists : If I drag a playlist out of one group and into another group, MJ presents me a with white square plus icon, which, based on standard Windows GUI behavior indicates a copy behavior, but instead is a move. I think this should behave exactly like Windows Explorer's drag and drop, including using Shift and Ctrl to modify the behavior, and allowing the Right Click drag that Windows has. It would just be more intuitive to people alreay using Windows.
Adding images and music to Playing Now isn't consistent. If audio is already in Playing Now, then Adding images to Playing Now results in those images being tacked on to the end of Playing Now (but are never shown - even when their turn in Playing Now arrives), if music is played first, then images are played, Playing Now is wiped and only images are shown, but if images are played first, and then music is added, the desired result of images and audio simultaneously is acheived.
If I Play images, then Play a playlist with music and video in it, the slideshow clears immediately even if the first file to play is Audio.
When viewing images and listening to music, if Playing Now contains a video, playing that video will clear all images from slideshow.
MEGA-ME Skinning : Renaming a playlist gives me the following drawing bug:
Ever since Tree View got the ability to display individual items in the tree, Quick Play acts all funky. I can't choose an individual file to play from Media Library without also telling the Tree View to display track names.
Image List View : This doesn't select files correctly. If you select one file, then hold control to select a few more, that works. If you hold down shift and select a range, that works as well. But when holding down Control + Shift to add a range of files to the currently selected files, all of the currently selected files become unselected.

Requests

It would be really cool if the mini-me button had an optional dropdown list of available skins. Meaning one of those two part buttons where the main part just switches to the previously selected skin, but the right hand side has a little arrow that when clicked shows the list.
It would be really nice if when you were dragging columns around in Content View, it would scroll. It would make reordering columns a lot easier.
CD Burning : It would be really helpful if you could right click on a CD-RW drive and choose to erase a CDRW disc from there instead of having to go into the CD burning dialog.
CD Burning : It would also be really nice to have some sort of progress indicator when erasing a CDRW disc.
IE Integration : Any chance of seeing some way to right click on an image in IE or Netscape and automatically saving the picture and importing it into MJ?
Vis Bars : I'd (still) like to see seperate hide modes for each of MJ's display modes (Internal, External, Fullscreen). I'd like to have them never hide in Internal, but autohide in Fullscreen & External, for instance.
Rename from Properties & Fill Properties from Filename : Any way we could get a wizard-type interface for this like we now have (more or less) with the Search bar?
Replay Gain : MJ really needs Album Gain. If Playing Now contains a full album, use Album Gain, otherwise, use Radio Gain. If it's a mix between a full album and mixed tracks, check to see if the tracks belonging to the album are all in track order. If so, use Album Gain on those tracks. If not, use Radio Gain on the entire Playing Now list.
Image List View : Can there be some "missing image" image? Like the MJ logo in place of a blank square? Or a red circle with a line through it? Or better yet, an image that we can specify for all missing artwork?
Image List View : For the single image album art view, there needs to be a way to see the tracks belonging to that album. Maybe a multipaned view that shows the cover image on the left and the track names on the right? Or even a tooltip balloon like the ones that Rhino is using in his AlbumView plugin.
Content View : Can all views remember their own view settings? Basically, what I'd like to see is Playing Now being able to just display Artist, Album, Name, and Track #, but have Media Library display more detailed information, like filename, BPM, etc. I'd also like to be able to specify that an Album view scheme display the album art view, but an Artist view shows the regular text view, etc. Playing Now should be able to be independently set to always show list view or image view, etc.
Slideshow : How about an option to display the filename of the current file in Fullscreen mode?
Ripping : I'd also like to see MJ be able to rip a CD to one wav\ape\mp3 and create a CUE sheet. Being able to create the relevant APL or whatever files in addition would be great along with an option to either import the full album wav\ape\mp3 or not.
Visualizations : Can these remember what Display Quality to use based on what mode (Full Screen, MEGA-ME, mini-me) MJ is in?
Can we get an option in Skin Manager to close Skin Manager on skin change?
In order to change the Sorting options, you need to 1. Select the field you want to move. 2. Click Edit. 3. Click Move Selected Up/Down. Wouldn't it be simpler to allow dragging of items? Or even two arrows (up/down) beside this box that would move the items?
The "Track # for Albums" checkbox needs some better explanation.

If you cancel out of the Media Search results list box you get a 'failed to connect' message and you get dumped into the default library instead of the library you were originally connected to.

Random question about realaudio files and MC9.

I've imported a few .ram files that are videos and showing up as such in the file properties. Now, for some reason these files are also showing up under the "Audio" and "Video" tab under Media Library...

Is this a bug or something else?

I'm not sure if this is a bug or by design, but when you "delete" a file from within a smartlist, it simply removes it from the list...as opposed to giving you the option to remove it from the library and/or removing the file itself. This presents a problem when trying to make use of the "possible duplicates" smartlist, as there is no way to remove those duplicates while in that smartlist without exiting to the main library view.

"Removing" a file from a smartlist does no good anyhow, as it simply returns once you reload the smartlist. Thanks if you can give this issue a look.

EDIT
- works ok when editing a single file (not via properties)
- painfully (and I really mean painfully) slow if I edit through properties although it seems to be only on some fields, namely the 'Name' field
- freezes in properties after two or three changes

RIPPING
- fails with a 'Read track failed. Unknown error = 1' message although the cd I'm trying to rip, plays ok through

If I have the "File Properties->Image" tab open an use Rotate on an image file, the thumbnail updates but not the file properties window.

Arrow keys don't work properly in thumbnail mode. Up and down work OK, but left and right only access the first two columns.

I can't pause a slideshow. Neither Ctrl-P nor the pause button do anything.

When using "Rename Files from Properties...", MC9 will not create directories if the base path is a UNC path. It says "Failed to update the following files..."

Keyboard problems:
Tab only takes you from the tree to the search field, not to the tracks.
When you're in the tree, Ctrl-W, Ctrl-W moves the focus to the search field for some reason
Pressing Alt-Enter to bring up the file properties window puts keyboard focus on the General tab, allowing you to expand and collapse it, but tab away and you can't get back to it. In fact, there's no way to expand a collapsed tab with the keyboard

Using the Z skin, scroll bars don't work. Clicking above or below the slider scrolls by 1 line, not 1 page. Clicking the arrows does nothing and dragging the slider doesn't update the list. Also, the scrollbar can freeze, particularly on Find & Replace.

Why has Image Location been removed from Find and Replace?

Having Ctrl-W cycle between MC, full screen and Hairstyle is horrid. Isn't the point of hairstyle to hide the MC window for a HTPC? I suspect most people would want to switch between MC and full screen (for computer use) and Hairstyle and full screen (for HTPC use). Separate hotkeys for Full Screen and Hairstyle have to be the way to go.

REQUEST: Could a view scheme have a "Default view mode" option. I'd rather see thumbnails for my images, but a detailed list for my music

REQUEST: I love the way a frame from a video file is taken for the thumbnail, but could this be customisable? The default seems to be 1 second in, but for a lot of films, this is still black. I'd like to be able to shuttle in to the title sequence or a representative frame and do "Set as thumbnail frame"

REQUEST: If you have a grouping on an alphabetical field, you see

E-H
I-L
etc.
If you press F on the keyboard, it skips over E-H down to the next thing that begins with F. If you have something in the E-H group that begins with F, it would be nice if it would open that group and select it. Hope that makes sense

Hold the "SHIFT" key down when you do the delete. You'll get a message box asking if you want to delete and it will have a checkbox in it asking if you want to delete the actual file.

Fill Track Numbers from List Order really took a huge hit when File Properties was integrated into the interface. It's now impossible to re-order files in Content View without first adding them to a playlist, which hinders the usability of this feature.
Does the floating File Properties box really need two Close buttons?

Nikolay, I think this is the same problem I've been reporting for a while. If you cancel from the search, you get dumped in to the default library. This is fine if you actually USE the default library, which I and others do not. Mine's completely empty mostly so I don't have to worry about it when I do complete uninstalls.

It should remember the library that was open when you started the search and return to it on a cancel.
