Special characters
« on: May 04, 2023, 08:53:46 pm »

In the past when a Group had some special characters, the Group would not display the music inside it. Only when the special character was removed - contents of the Group would appear. I've complained about it before for a few years. But with the latest update even MORE characters now make contents of a Group disappear. For example, before the update Karel Ančerl as the title of the Group would be fine. But since the update, items in this Group vanish. If I change that č to a regular C, they'll reappear.

Again, this has been a problem for years with some characters having this issue. But now the problem has expanded. Can this be fixed? (And while at it make all special characters acceptable in Group names? It's odd that this happens at all.)

Thanks!

FYI, this was one of the my old posts complaining about it. And it just got worse!

What do you mean with a name with special characters in a GROUP?
I asked for many years to repair the problem with special characters and in the last year
finally there was a big improvement that solved most of the problems.

A screen shot or two would probably clarify what you are reporting.

I've been complaining about this for years, but it got worse. Here are two screen grabs of one example. When I change one character in Karel Ančerl's name (č to c).

Another example is Dvorak's name. See two screen grabs.

On the left, are these playlists for composers and conductors?
Strange is that Dvořák is a problem while Dvorák seems to work, despite the accent on the a.
I created a smartlist with Janáček, Leoš and a playlist with Dvořák, Antonín (1841 - 1904).
Both work and show the content (as you can see in the appended pictures).
By the way: ř is missing in the special character list in MC.

Thanks for running a test!

Yes, on the left are Composers and then subgroups for conductors/soloists.

I'm using Groups for my library. Groups are the ones that have the problem with some characters - but not all. And Ančel worked fine until the last update!

Janáček does not work in Groups. Neither does Martinů.

It's odd and just makes no sense. These aren't even letters I'm pasting into MC. These are all part of the MC special character list I get when I hold down a letter.

It's not. I just tested that.

Also, I have no issues creating special characters in the groups, subgroups or entries within the subgroups with 30.0.93.

You're able to have Ančel, Martinů, and Janáček as Group names - and albums within don't vanish? Then I don't know what to say because this has been a problem for me for years and got worse with the last update. What could possibly be the reason if it's not true for everyone? Because this is what happens with me:

Are the files tagged properly with pre-composed utf-8 characters and not decomposed utf-8 filesystem type characters?

Uhm honestly, I have no idea. I'm on a Mac, I hold down a letter and choose an option from the drop down menu. So the letter exists in MC. And again, Ančel worked fine until a week or two ago.  ?

The change to the stable release was about a week ago. The previous stable release stored filenames in de-composed utf-8. The current stable release stores them in pre-composed utf-8.
If you create a group with the letter from a drop down menu, that will be pre-composed.
If the files artist/album tags are de-composed they will not match.

Upon running the first time with the current stable build (30.0.93), if your database had de-composed utf-8 in it, they should have gotten converted then.

Would you mind emailing me a copy of your database? (make a backup and email me the zipfile)
You could send it to

Thanks

Dear Bob,

could the czech ř be added to the special character drop down menu of MC?
And for some versions now _ is removed from an album of files name if I use clean file properties.
Brahms_Sinfonie1_Abendroth_RSOLeipzig_Prag1952
changes to
Brahms Sinfonie1 Abendroth RSOLeipzig Prag1952

Hi Frank,

The czech ř works for me if I hold down the r key.
Is there some other method I'm missing?

Sorry, you are right. Great.
Is this new?
And, by the way: on the Mac in other programs it doesn't work (or I have to change the language to Czech)

I just tried one test. It worked fine to change the group name of
Martinu to Martinů
The files stayed in the group.
Can you give me an example of what you are seeing?

Hey guys (Bob specifically?)

Just curious if there are any updates on this issue? It hasn't gone away for me, but apparently these "special characters" work for others. Bob, did you have a chance to figure out what might be happening after I emailed you a database?

Thanks!
