30.0.93 won't start
« on: May 06, 2023, 08:07:30 am »

30.0.93 won't start on Mac.
The GUI appears, but then it is beachballing indefinitely with 100% cpu.

MacPro6,1
  12GB Memory
Processor name:   Quad-Core Intel Xeon E5
  Processor speed:   3.7 GHz
  Processors:         1
  Cores:                  4
  Mac OS Monterey 12.6.5

BN

Edit:
Ok, I found the "reason".
I had an audio CD mounted, intending to rip. If I remove the CD and restart Media Center, it seems to be ok.
However, if I insert/mount the CD again, the beachball pops up and everything hangs at 100% cpu.
Forever.
I have tried both home-burnt and commercially printed CD's, same thing.

The CD unit is a SAMSUNG Mediatek:
Produkt-ID:   0x1806
  Tillverkar-ID:   0x0e8d  (MediaTek Inc.)
  Version:   0.00
  Serienummer:   S16B6YMF9012B1
  Hastighet:   Upp till 480 Mbit/s
  Tillverkare:   MediaTek Inc
  Plats-ID:   0x00314000 / 27
  Tillgänglig ström (mA):   500
  Nödvändig ström (mA):   500
  Extra arbetsström (mA):   0

strange tip.
install one of old MC's, like MC28 or 29. see if it works.
Then install MC30.93
I experienced something like this in the past.
If it works it could mean a bug wth fresh install.

MC29 works fine in this respect.
MC30 previous version was definitely a lot more more shaky than MC29, but it worked if you were patient.

I've been using MC for Mac since MC20.  There was a short time when some of my installations of MC would take forever to start and beachball.  Some of them crashed.  All of that turned out to be bad files that MC was trying to import.

During the next 7 years I watched many people report that MC crashed or was slow to start.  Most of them turned out to also have bad files.

Once I got rid of my bad files, MC has been rather solid.  Sure it will do weird stuff if you press the forward or back button really fast several times in a row.  It's less tolerant of sending audio to DLNA devices than to direct attached USB devices.  But it's generally very stable.  I almost never see a crash.

So, if you can disable auto import, do so.  It might make a big difference.

Best of luck.

I always seem to get lost in MC's settings.
How do you disable autoimport from an inserted CD?

There's a search window at the bottom of the settings page.

I think that is under CD > auto rip mode > enable auto rip

But it's not quite that simple because MacOS controls what happens when you first insert the disc.  In Mac system preferences you'll find "CDs and DVDs" .  It then has a bunch of options for what to do with each type of disc.  Set those appropriately and you should get what you want.

Sorry, but no. Removable volumes was already enabled for MC30.
MC30 with CD is simply not working for me.
Today MC30 with a CD mounted was completely unresponsive, not even a beachball.
The main window was not moveable on the desktop and none of the menus worked.
I hope MC31 will be better, until then I will use MC29.

You should probably set CDs and DVDs to ignore inserted audio CDs.  That would be a good first troubleshooting step.

Generating a log might help if MC's in a loop for detecting a CD for your particular device.
You can turn on logging without a CD inserted.
Quit MC
Insert a CD
Start MC
Let it run hung for a 10 seconds or so.
Force quit it.
Post the log.
