Inconsistent scores from Benchmark
« on: May 24, 2023, 06:22:41 am »

The other week I was messing about in MC and did some successive runs of Benchmark and spotted a difference of around 300 in the results for the same pC.

So today I carried out some testing on both my Win and Mac PC's.

For both I opened MC31 at the Start Page, let it sit idle for 5 minutes and than ran "Benchmark", recorded the score, closed the Benchmark form/window waited 5 minutes and reran Benchmark; and did that 4 more times to give a total of 6 scores. I then closed MC, re-opened it and immediately re-ran Benchmark to give me a 7th score.

The results for windows were:- 6033, 5956, 5935, 5885,  5953, 5993 and 5997
The results for the mac were;- 7625, 7548, 7584, 7475, 7488, 7548 and 8246

I was using the latest MC 31 versions on both platforms, other than any OS and AV background tasks, MC was the only piece of software open/running and had been told not to carry out any background tasks before I ran the tests.

One other piece of information - the last time I'd run Benchmark on both PC's was under MC31.0.9 and the scores were 5898 for the Win PC and 7679 for the Mac PC .

On Windows you get way more consistent scores if you set the power plan to "High performance". Otherwise its at the mercy of dynamic power management.
I would assume Mac does something similar, but no clue how to set it there.

Hendrik - The Win PC is running Win12 and the power plan is set to "Best Performance" which I'm guessing is the new name for "High Performanc"
The only Power Setting I've been able to find on the Mac is the on/off switch

"Best Performance" does not disable power management. You need to set the legacy power plan to "High Performance" in the old control panel. But its generally not recommended to do this for actual day to day use. It would only make the scores a bit more consistent.
