When will be able to use Replay Gain?
« on: February 19, 2003, 10:56:30 am »

hi,

i've just downloaded build 115 and was disappointed, once again, that media jukebox hasn't fixed the problem with the Analyze Audio function returning no value for replay gain.

or is replay gain properly analyzed and safed to the library and usable with Replay Gain in the DSP window being on, but just not shown properly in this column?

So when can we use replay gain?

We can't reproduce this problem.

Can you (or anyone) offer any more details about what files fail to be analyzed by the "Audio Analyzer"?

Thanks for helping.

I have the problem too:

If I analyze a file(s), the status stays QUEUED and Replay Gain stays "?"

The smartlist "to be analyzed" then always shows all files still need to be analyzed.
Some other friends of mine all have the same problem.

Ive just analysed 10 .ape files with replay gain and all is well.

I also done a whole load last week with the .113 build and it was also okay.

i'm only using MP3 files created by Lame 3.92.

All the other values (peak, intensity, bpm etc) are shown for each file.

But the replay gain column in the Analyze Audio window as well as in the main window of Media Jukebox has only "?"s for the replay gain value.

My system: Athlon 1400, 512 MB RAM, Win XP Home with SP1, using MJ 9.0.155

Marty3d seems to have the same problem. Look what he said about the new build 115 in the corresponding thread http://www.musicex.com/cgi-bin/yabb/YaBB.cgi?board=beta;action=display;num=1045610926 :
Quote

MC 9.0.115
*NEW
- Last played and Number plays now changes, BUT in the middle of the song. So when the song is played to the end, it shows "played 3min 21 sec ago". This can't be right.
- Importing sometimes uses some other field than artist in tag, TPE2 I believe, even though "ID3v1 Tag - Artist" and "ID3v2 Tag - TPE1" is filled out
*OLD
- Tooltip in notification area doesn't display '&'
- Analyzing audio sets replay gain to '?'. As a side effect, the "skip analyzed files" don't work since replay gain is resetted.
- Shift-Deleting a file in Playing Now reorders the list after the current sorting order

Hi Matt,

Same problem here for both mpc and mp3 files (with or without tags).

Peak Level, BP and Intensity seems Ok but Replay Gain is stuck to '?' and status always comes back
to the 'Queued' state !

One thing I'm still using '9.0114'

Do any of these matter: (none should, but there could be a bug)

- location of the file
- DSP studio settings
- selected playback zone
- if MC is playing / stopped
- if you "Clear" the replay gain in file properties before analyzing

Thanks!

- location of my mp3 files = c:\my music\general (tried other locations as well)

- Tried with and without DSP studio settings

- Have 2 playback zones, tried both of them

- Mc playing or stopped, tried both

- Clear replay gain settings, analyzed again

All the same problem, all settings are set except Replay Gain which stays on "?"

Hello,

Clear Replay Gain before : No effect (mpc, mp3)

MC Playing : No effect with MP3, Error (Broken frame..) with MPC

DSP Studio Settings : All on or off : No effect mpc, mp3

Clip Protection (On or Off) : No effect mpc, mp3

Playback Option (Standard / gapless / crossfade ) : Same result for all

Playback Zone : (Only one zone set)

File location : (Tried on three different locations - three different HDD) : same thing

Also tried (check/uncheck Update Tag when file info changed) : same problem

no luck :(

Can you backup your library, erase the .jmd files, and then try?

Restore from the backup after you're done testing.

Thanks!

( if it is the library, please send a sample to matt @ jriver.com )

Matt, I can tell you it's probably not the library, since I made a fresh install (formatted C: and reinstalled windows, forgetting to back up the library) with .115.

I'll try some stuff here...I'll return :)

Matt,

I tried on a fresh library after removing all the .jmd and imported a few files : still the same problem with both MP3 & MPC !!

-Clearing the values don't work. Dialog: "Information Values are already cleared. Nothing to do."
-Changing output to wave and removing "remove silence" didn't help
-Turning off RG in DSP didin't help
-Turning on RG in DSP and changing the way clipping and RG is handled didn't help
-Changing mp3 plugin settings to save ID3v1 tags didn't help
-Playing/stopped doesn't change a thing
-Zone...I dunno, haven't even looked at it until today...but no strange things there...
-Turning off skin didn't do it..
-Enabling all dsp settings didn't do it

Sorry, can't help out more right now... I have one of the short mp3's here if you want to examine it for yourself, but the error applies to all files :(

Matt,

Tried to switch user (on XP) -> same problem,

I Just noticed that Marty3D & Bennyd are, just like me, located in Europe,
could this be a problem of locale ??  My XP is in french ?

Yep, that's it,

Went back to my french locale but replaced the decimal point symbol from comma (french locale default) to point and Analysis went fine.

Well! Good job finding it! :)

Why are the Replay Gain db values in MC alwas negative ones (between -3db and -15db or so). I'm used to values around 90db by MP3Gain.

In the DSP window I want to use a fixed TARGET db value adjustment when playing my songs instead of automated adjustment based on playlist. For i'm jumping between playlists.

So which fixed TARGET db value should i choose?

0db?

MP3gain uses a target of 89dB.  MJ/MC Replay Gain uses a target of 83dB (because that is what the original developer of the Replay Gain specs  used).

When you analyze with MJ/MC and you get a negative gain value (-13.28 for example) this means that is how much the gain needs to be adjusted to reach the target of 83dB.

I use 6dB as my fixed gain adjustment which, in effect, raises MJ/MC's 83dB target to 89dB.  I was using the automatic adjustment for awhile, but noticed that it caused some clipping/distortion on some tracks, which went away when I swithed to fixed.

are MC and MP3Gain using different algorithms to analyze Replay Gain?

Because MP3Gain always calculates values between 88db and 99db, while MC, for the same songs, has values from -6 to -15 (to be subtracted from 83db, if i understood u well), that are values around 68-78db. What a difference.

Furthermore I don't understand the Replay Gain dialog in MC quite well:
example:
Replay Gain (for current track):   - 8,6db
Fixed Adjustment (like u proposed):  6db
Total Volume Change :  -2,6db

if i understand, that means the song has an average loudness of 83-8,6db = 74,4db and i want to raise it up to 89db (=83+6).

Then, Should the Total Volume Change not be about 8,6+6= +14,6db ?
But MC indicates -2,6db.

Help me out or fix this.

After switching from Dutch (Dutch) to English (United States) the Replay Gain ends up OK. Now the Peaklevel falls to 0%, where it probably is 100%.

I will wait for the fix. Any build in mind?

A related question:
It seems that I have to analyze all 4500 tracks once more (after the fix off course). Normally no problem, but there seems to be a memory leak. After 200 tracks my system (XP Home + all updates) stops working. Any tips or tricks??

I really don't know. I would assume they are using the same algorithms, but using different methods to implement them.

Quote
example:
Replay Gain (for current track):   - 8,6db
Fixed Adjustment (like u proposed):  6db
Total Volume Change :  -2,6db

if i understand, that means the song has an average loudness of 83-8,6db = 74,4db and i want to raise it up to 89db (=83+6).

You misunderstood. The gain value that MC calculates is subtracted from the original gain in order to reach a target gain of 83dB. So, in your example, MC analyzed the track and found it to have a loudness of 91.6dB. In order to reach the target gain of 83dB, it applies a gain of -8.6dB (91.6dB - 8.6dB = 83dB + 6dB = 89dB).
