Who's got the fastest BPM?
« on: February 19, 2003, 08:55:59 pm »

I was analysing a few tracks earlier on and MC returned a  BPM of 3387 for Roberta Flack's 'Feel Like Making Love'....She must have one hell of a metabolic rate !!!

It was kinda disappointing when I reran it and it gave the correct value of 93BPM.

I was interested in who might have the fastest BPM....

Well of my 13,187 files the winner is Jealous by Robert Palmer at a BPM of 155.  Second place goes to Wasted On The Way by Crosby Stills and Nash at 153 and two tied for third at 151 are Birdsong by Cleo Laine and Moment of Conception by David Byrne.
Frankly, I'm not sure the BPM and Intensity ratings work.  Does anyone have any experience with them or thoughts on this?

It's easy to test it. Just listen to one minute of the song and count the beats (or listen to 15 seconds and multiply by 4). It's seems to be pretty accurate for the tracks I've looked at.

As for CSN Wasted On the Way, I'd believe 153/4....I think it's "listening" to sixteenth notes as quarter notes.... then again I haven't seen the group's sheet music so there's no sure way to know how they sliced it.

Actually I wasn't questioning the accuracy of BPM and Intensity but I'm unclear on how to put them to work.  I have made a few attempts to create smart playlists with them without much success.  Looking thru the library and comparing music types, moods, or whatever I can't really find a common pattern for either BPM or Intensity, at least enough to be useful.
I'd appreciate anybody's advice or experience in putting these features to work.

BPM and intensity are not the most scientifically accurate measurements on the wall. I use them in general scenarios such as:

[BPM]=>100 [Intensity]=>3 [Genre]="Pop". This gives me an upbeat selection of Pop music. Similarly, [BPM]=60-120 [Intensity]=<3 [Genre]="House" gives me mellow house tunes.

This is nice for playing tunes which might fit into the necessary groups, but that you wouldn't normally listen to, or actually don't know the tune in the first instance.

Hope this helps.

MC 29

BPM 171:  Van Morrison, All Work and No Play, from Down The Road album

I don't think the BPM calculation has improved much over the years.
