mc31 video playback failure same as mc28

Media Editor is under Advanced Tools but maybe the joke is on me. I thought you could do simple video editing like cutting the way Audio files could be. But apparently not. The error message is too vague IMO. It should say video formats not supported or something like that. Instead it goes to a great show of decoding the file for a minute and then pops up and says: error can't open file. But if the "Media Editor" is limited to audio then it should say Audio Editor instead.

I imagine there are dozens of different simple video editors for Windows.  I don't have any real information on what might be the best one.

But I've been using a cross platform simple video editor for years called AviDemux.  It's able to read many formats of video and audio.  It writes a pretty good variety of formats also.

If you are simply cutting on key frames, it's very easy to use and rather fast to save your new "cut" file.  I just tried it on an MKV and an MP4.  Both saved a trimmed clip very quickly.

If you want to change audio or video codecs it takes quite a bit longer.  But it works well for those types of tasks as well.  It runs on Windows, but I've never run it on that platform.  It's free so it might be worth a look for simple tasks.

Brian.

Thanks Brian for the editor recommend. And thanks to the max for your correct insight into what was going wrong in versions after 25 for video playback on my computer. I think it should be added to Help.

I'm glad my guess was a good one and was able to help you.  :)

Brian.
