I'm using JRiver 30.0.97 on a 2012 Mac Mini (OSX 10.15.7, the latest for that computer), connected to a Benchmark DAC3B via USB. I've been playing all PCM resolutions as well as DSD/DSF for some time now (years) with no problems. Recently, when I play a DSF/DSF file, I get no audio output from the DAC, only a very faint hiss, and the DAC LEDs indicate its receiving 24/176, not bitstreamed DoP. As an interesting note, when I play a 16-44 redbook file, the DAC now indicates its getting 24 bits from JRiver, previously it correctly reported 16 bits. All PCM sample rates play fine.
Debugging:
1. I've swapped out the USB cable, no change.
2. I tried using and older version of JRiver (23) on this Mac Mini, and I get the same problem - JRiver thinks its outputting bitstreamed DSD, but the output is silent, so I'm thinking maybe some Mac system setting is the issue.
3.I then moved the DAC to my older backup 2009 Mac Mini (OSX 10.11.6, latest for that machine), which has JRiver 20.0.126 running, and DSD/DSF files play fine in bitstream/DoP on that machine. Also, 16-44 files correctly show correctly as 16 bits on the DAC, so I'm pretty sure the problem is NOT the DAC3.
Settings:
There have been no (intentional) changes to the 2012 Mac Mini setup, and the relevant options look normal: Bitstreaming is set to DSD and DSP/Output Format
sample rates all set to no change, and Output Encoding set to none.
Any suggestions what could be causing this DSD playback problem on my 2012 Mac Mini?
Thanks,
Mike
PS: I'm a very long term JRiver user, going back to when it was free many years ago.
