source for an oddball M.2 SSD?
« on: July 24, 2023, 10:25:15 am »

Hi, besides trolling through Amazon and Newegg, does anyone have a source for an SSD:

M.2 2242
NVMe, PCI3x2
B&M keyed

Ideally looking for a 512 Gb....

The KingSpec brand on Amazon has a few, but there are just enough complaints about reliability and warranty problems to make me nervous.

Thanks

I've had good luck with the Sabrent Rockets. They don't have DRAM (do any 2242's?) so no bursty benchmarks, but they are TLC so good endurance and sustained performance. One tip: I always wish I had bought bigger in hindsight especially as they tend to get repurposed down the road.

The challenge is finding one that is keyed as B&M (two slots).

B+M slots accept B-key or M-key, the difference lies in the protocol (mSATA, 2x2 PCIe, 4x4 PCIe). You mentioned your mobo's protocol is PCIe 2x2, 4x4 (M) is backwards compatible with 2x2 (B), hence why these slots are often keyed for both. So you should be fine with an M keyed 4x4 2242 NVMe M key drive.

If I'm wrong please let me know!

following up.

Ended up with an M-key Samsung 2242 512 Gb NVMe drive (replacing the factory 64Gb drive).  Fit and works fine.  Thanks for the pointer away from the B&M key.
