Suddenly can't play to Player (Id)
« on: July 23, 2023, 08:12:50 pm »

I play my music on home stereo, controlling via JRemote navigating my Id. Worked fine this morning, and decided to go in and use the DSP panel (an area I only know a little about), to turn on volume leveling, which I find critical for enjoyment of my Playlists.

My Id (NUC) is connected via TOSLINK to my control amp (which includes a DAC), and it's always worked great with the audio input to:

"front:CARD=PCH,DEV=0, [ALSA] HDA Intel PCH, ALC283 Analog. Front speakers"

I don't understand most of that line, but whatever. It's worked for years, and I'm happy with the setup. So, I remote in to the Id, go to the Tools -> Options -> Audio -> Settings, and click the "DSP & output format", and tick the boxed for Volume Leveling and Adaptive Volume. I've used these features before (turned them off to do some experimenting), and now I cannot play to the Player zone (the Id). I can play to my Device (iPhone), I can play to another zone, but no matter what I do, I can't play to the Player. I do get an error. It says that "Something went wrong with playback", and references an output that is completely foreign to me: "'ALSA' using the format 44.1 kHz 6ch". 6ch??? What?

Yes, I've unticked the Volume Leveling and the Adaptive Volume, and saved changes, and rebooted the Id, and still the error persists.

What am I missing? Screenshots attached.

You said you are connected from the Id to your "control amp" via TOSLINK, which is optical digital.  But your sound device you show selected says "analog".

I would expect that you probably need to use one of the devices that says "digital" since you want to use the digital output (TOSLINK).

You could probably restore your settings only by doing a Library Restore, but I would hold off on that and do some more experimentation first.

Someone with Id and/or Linux experience with MC can probably give you some good advice.  Linux audio device naming is pretty confusing.  I say this as a Linux admin of more than 20 years.

Give the two hw: audio outputs a try, there's one for digital and one for analog.
