MC28 > MC31
bMinor:
Running MC28 on a new M1 Mac I considered an upgrade and had just launched MC31 for the 1st time when I was called away from the Mac.
When I got back a few minutes later MC31 was scanning my Mac importing everything it could find anywhere.
That’s a NO NO.
I deleted MC31 application + the MC31 folder in user/library/application support/J River/
1. Does deleting the above get rid of everything associated with MC31?
MC28 is not totally unusable on an M1 Mac but there’s enough flaws to make me wanna move on.
So, checking out MC31 is my 1st choice but not the only one.
I’m running MC just as a personal local jukebox with no need or desire whatsoever to stream or connect to unwanted services etc anywhere except to JRiver for registration and running JRemote from my iPad.
No Facebook, No Google, no nothing. Everything just local. (Is that possible on MC31?)
What I need is a stable (not the latest) application to run my local jukebox on an M1 especially without the glitches in the graphics department which I’m experiencing in MC28 right now, like the screen going white after exiting cover view.
2. Are there ANY known issues importing a MC28 backup into MC31?
3. Are there ANY issues with MC31 and JRemote?
Thanks!
PS
Considering upgrading to an M1 Mac?:
With all of my audio files on an external hard drive I migrated a MC28 library from a 2013 intel Mac to an M1 instantly without a hitch. How does performance differ? It’s like going from Dial-Up internet (if you can remember that) to fibre optics high speed….I’m not looking back
Awesome Donkey:
If you're switching from MC28 to MC31, I would highly recommend doing a library backup in MC28 then restoring that library backup in MC31 as soon as the app starts, so it imports all your settings and playlists, otherwise the default behavior in a freshly installed MC is to try auto-importing all your media after 45 seconds unless you disable auto-import (or restore a library backup, then it'll do whatever you have it set to do for auto-import).
bMinor:
I received a code for a MC31 trial extension. It did NOT work and MC31 won't launch at all now unless I purchase.
Going back to my intel Mac to try it out is not an option as I need to run it on an M1
JimH:
The extension code is only good for 45 days after the original installation.

This is intended behavior. It happens on all versions of MC, Windows, Mac, Linux, etc. It's been the norm since somewhere around MC21 or perhaps MC22.
Several people, myself included, have given their opinions that is is a bad feature. It leads to people like you feeling like something invasive has happened. In your case, you took the somewhat drastic action of deleting everything associated with MC31. I can understand why you felt that way.
So far, the MC team thinks this feature is beneficial overall and has rejected the opinions of those that think it should be disabled.
You can, of course, press the button on the interface that stops this. If you are watching and you press the button it will not run a global "search everything" import. With every new MC version that's what I do. I then import a backup from the previous version of MC. This has worked very well for me for nearly a decade of using MC.
I can't directly answer your questions about MC31. I can say that I've been using it since it came out and it seems just as good as the other MCs I've used. I would not go back to 28 personally. 31 has enough new and better behaviors. It's an evolution of the product. I can't say if it addresses your specific concerns or not, like the "white screen" behavior you described.
Best of luck to you.
Brian.
