Tidal/Streaming - current position
« on: October 09, 2023, 09:42:36 am »

Can I please ask what the current JRiver position is with providing a Tidal/streaming integration? Especially on MAC. I am really quite happy with JRiver and been a customer for over 5 years, however, I find myself increasingly wanting to integrate streaming with my personal library in one application - which appears to be not an option with MAC/JRiver. Thanks.

JRiver actually did do a Tidal integration years ago, but it was removed before release due to Tidal's unreasonable demands regarding things like controlling how the UI looked if memory serves. Because of that bad experience, I don't honestly think it's going to ever change unless something drastic happens, e.g. Tidal pays JRiver to integrate and they don't interfere with demands that previously derailed the whole thing. That likely also applies to Qobuz, Amazon, etc. integrations too. Hell probably has a better chance of freezing over, or more likely Tidal goes under first, which could happen as they don't seem to do too well operating with losses.

You can find more by searching the forums and reading Jim's posts about the experience, here's one of them: https://yabb.jriver.com/interact/index.php/topic,128568.0.html and here's another that keeps track of the struggles of streaming services: https://yabb.jriver.com/interact/index.php/topic,101545.0.html

Hi Awesome Donkey - thanks - I understand there were issues, however, life moves on and streaming seems to be more mainstream now - especially with hi res on offer. I don't want to move away from JRiver, however.........

JimH - thanks - I will look into Cloudplay.

I will take this as a very unlikely then - whatever the differences and issues there are with integrating streaming services into JRiver, I would had thought that in order to maintain market share you need to follow what your customers are doing?

We choose our development path by doing what our customers want and what we want.  We have streaming solutions already.  We're not investing time and money in supporting all solutions.

We've done many such integrations over the years.  It's not a technical issue.  We're just not going to support Tidal.

Tidal was one of the lone supporters of MQA.  That turned out to be ill-advised.

Try reading more about Tidal's business problems by searching on the Internet.

Hi Jim - can I ask then please which hi res streaming services do you support please - as I am not wedded to Tidal. I looked at Cloudplay, but prefer playing whole recordings rather than playlists. Thanks

Cloudplay is what JRiver focuses on.

On Windows you can pipe audio through MC from Tidal, Qobuz, etc. apps using the WDM driver.
