(minimum requirement MacOS 10.11)

31.0.83 (11/14/2023)

1. Changed: Updated German translation file (thanks Bytestar).
2. Changed: When scanning for ATSC and DVB TV channels, information of all available audio streams will be saved in each channel.
3. Changed: Updated Chinese (simplified) translation file (thanks YanJun Sun).
4. Fixed: Some non-string IPTC core (IIM) image tags were not written correctly.
5. Changed: When writing IPTC Core (IIM) image tags, MC will preserve existing record 1 tags.
6. NEW: Added PLS to the list of formats in the export playlist tool.
7. NEW: Also added PLS to the list of handheld formats for playlists.
8. Changed: When writing image tags to IPTC Core (IIM) we will try to observe the IPTC-imposed character-count limits, by truncating strings that are too long.
9. Changed: Made the default size of Analyze Audio bigger.
10. Changed: When editing image field "Scene Code", a fixed list of values (from IPTC specification) are presented in the drop-down multi-selection list, in addition to other items.

31.0.80 (10/26/2023)

1. Changed: Updated all translations to the latest strings from the code.
2. NEW: IPTC "Scene Code" tag (XMP "Scene") will be read into, or written from user defined custom field "Scene Code" (a list type).  If there is demand, we can create a stock field for it.
3. Fixed: Double click an image in Playing Now was not starting playback for the last few builds in all cases.
4. NEW: Added a Rebuild Thumbnail command to the image right-click menu.
5. Fixed: Black and White (single bit representation) tiff files are now supported.
6. NEW: E-AC-3 playback enabled (extension eac3).

31.0.78 (10/24/2023)

1. Changed: When writing IPTC core tags (IIM) tag texts are always written in UTF-8 encoding.
2. Fixed: Added a sanity check when reading date/time tags from TIFF images, preventing a crash on malformed files.
3. Changed: Updated Greek translation (thanks Panagiotis).
4. Fixed: When performing Update Tags (from Library), "Name" field was not saved to jpg image's IPTC and XMP tags.
5. Fixed: "Sublocation" and "Headline" fields were accidentally created as User field.
6. Fixed: Date last rated could get set on import when the file rating came in.
7. Fixed: "Sublocation" and "Headline" fields were flagged for all media types, instead of image-only.
8. Fixed: The OSD was unintentionally showing seconds on the time for the last few builds.
9. Changed: Writing of "Event" tag to XMP is disabled until further notice.  Reading is OK.
10. Fixed: Some DSD playback was broken in build 31.0.77.
11. Changed: Tuning of the CoreAudio interface to better handle varying settings, available device sample rates, DSD file opening and added more device logging.
12. Fixed: Issues with the menu bar menu under Sonoma.

31.0.77 (10/19/2023)

1. Changed: The "Source" field added for a few builds is no longer flagged that it must exist, so you can delete it.
2. Changed: When reading image tags, XMP tags will take precedence over IPTC core tags.
3. Changed: (Lightroom written) SupplementalCategories tag (IPTC and XMP) will be read into custom "Subcategories" field, instead of "Supplemental Categories" field.
4. NEW: (Lightroom compatibility) The IPTC/XMP "Category" tag will be read into custom field "LR Category".
5. Fixed: Supplemental Categories (Subcategories) tag were not written to XMP.
6. Changed: Only the three-character code is allowed to be saved in the Category tag in IPTC, but free text is allowed in XMP.
7. Changed: When editing an image on a library server client, the changes are sent right away to the server so the thumbnail is updated nicely.
8. Changed: Recently added image-only field "Source" is renamed "Source (Supply Chain)".
9. Changed: Updated the Catalan language (thanks Josep).
10. Changed: Updated a few plural display names for fields (we now merge the plural display name if the display name has not been changed).
11. Changed: Dates are formatted including seconds when they have a value by default (fixes tagging problems with seconds on dates).
12. Changed: Made the manage library field list wider.
13. NEW: Added a new field "Date Last Rated" that gets set any time the rating is changed.
14. Changed: When ripping and replacing, the old files are preserved until the end of the rip so that playlist data can be preserved.
15. NEW: Added a new list type field "Image Label" for image media type, and mapped it to XMP's Label tag.
16. NEW: Added a new field "Source" for image media type, and mapped it to IPTC and XMP "Source" tag.
17. Fixed: The option to resample uncommon sample rates did not save properly.
18. Fixed: Deleting a Podcast episode then playing other episodes next to it would bring the file out of the deleted database so the status would be wrong.
19. NEW: XMP tag "Event" will be read and written if a custom field "Event" has been created.
20. Changed: MC will read from XMP's newer "Sublocation" tag, instead of only reading from the legacy "Location" tag.  The latter will now only be used if the former does not exist.
21. Fixed: Local playback of DSD tracks will not attempt to invoke integer mode.

4. Fixed: Lists of artists were not playing from Cloudplay with Search DJ.
5. Changed: Improved delimiter support for Play Doctor playback with Search DJ.
6. NEW: First step in supporting EXIF 3.0.  When saving image tags, we will put [Name] into the new ImageTitle tag, in addition to previously supported ImageDescription tag.  The former will allow non-ASCII characters, while we still (artificially) restrict the latter to ASCII-only, for compatibility with other apps.
7. Changed: Search DJ should match files better than ever.

9. NEW: Added an advanced option to use a new extra channels routing system which revises how extra channels are handled so they are less likely to cause unexpected mixing (for example, picking 5.1 with 10 extra caused the SL/SR to go away) (Options > General > Advanced).
10. Fixed: Tag window selection could lag in some cases (was trying to animate, now it just renders immediately).

1. Changed: Internal changes in JRVR how the settings are handled.

4. Changed: Updated the Kodi NFO support to differentiate between <ratings> and <userratings> properly.
5. Fixed: When recording TV shows in TS format, the initial bookmarks might be wrong, especially when recording was started later than the actual program start time.

10. Changed: Tagging of EXIF datetime tags will use format "yyyy:MM:dd 00:00:00" for dates without time, instead of "yyyy:MM:dd   :  :  " so that Google Photos will recognize it.

I'm having a new (Sonoma) audio problem with my Lynx Aurora(n) Thunderbolt Interface. JRiver is preventing other software from having access to the interface. A Quick Look at the attached log "Aurora (n)" shows many many repeats of the following lines:

0012559: 6218723328: Encoders: CJRVideoEngine::AVLog: [swscaler @ 0000000290008000] No accelerated colorspace conversion found from yuv420p to bgra.
0012567: 6219296768: Playback: CCoreAudioPlugin::FillBuffers: Core audio is asking for more data than we have available?

Audio only playback shares the "core audio" problem.

This does not happen when using a virtual audio device to route audio to the Aurora as a work-around (log attached).

You likely have exclusive access enabled for the CoreAudio audio output (which is enabled by default as far as I know since it's needed for bit-perfect audio output). Go into MC's Options > Audio > Audio Device > Device settings... and disable exclusive mode. Keep in mind once exclusive access is disabled all audio in MC goes through the system mixer and won't be bit-perfect anymore.

Exclusive access is not selected or enabled.

I have no need for bit-perfect output (inaudible levels of distortion and artifacts is a requirement). I totally destroy bit-perfect with IIR and FIR filters for room correction, crossovers, and tonal balance preferences.

I did not have this issue prior to Sonoma.

You may try disabling integer mode if it's enabled as well.

Thanks, but no luck there either. Apple must have made a change in core audio. I have the latest drivers from Lynx Audio. No change in behavior. Other audio software I use like Room EQ Wizard, Reaper, Dirac, Loopback, and MacOS Audio Midi Setup communicate with the Lynx Aurora without causing problems.

Not seeing any audio only playback in that log, it's all coming from the libav code.
What are you playing?

Sorry for any confusion. Both logs were created when playing a mkv video file. I'll post a log playing an audio source file tomorrow.

Thanks for your support.

That's rather odd. I don't see any indication that it's setting exclusive access mode.
You might want to try one of the buffer size options in MC's audio device settings, it looks like there are underrun messages in the log.

Here's a log when playing back to a virtual audio device created with "Loopback" software. No problems that I can see. Same software buffer of 10 ms.

Prior to Sonoma there were no issues playing to the Aurora. All of my other audio software tools are working fine with the Aurora.

The software device doesn't really prove much.

I tried your test on Ventura with MC 31.0.83 and a iFI Nano iDSD external DAC with exclusive access off and integer mode off then started playback to a 44k m4a, went to Apples Music app and started playback through core audio (which is the only choice in Apple Music) to the same iFi Nano and I could hear both tracks playing at the same time so I don't see an issue with MC.

What's your source material?

MKV files w/chapters.  The commands work fine on MC31 Windows, but not on the same file(s) MC31 macOS.  Nothing happens.

Percentage jumping works.  Just not chapter jumps.

Hello, hope you can help.

I upgraded from MC28 to 31 a little while back but I can't get MC31 to run on my iMAC running macOS 14.1.2. Have tried reinstalling multiple times but on starting I always get "Media Center 31 quit unexpectedly." MC 30, however, does run OK. I also have the same problem when trying to run MC31 on my MacMini.

All the best and Festive good wishes, Malcolm.

Apple crash report attached:

Have tried reinstalling multiple times but on starting I always get "Media Center 31 quit unexpectedly." MC 30, however, does run OK. I also have the same problem when trying to run MC31 on my MacMini.

All the best and Festive good wishes, Malcolm.

Apple crash report attached:
Most likely a permissions issue.
Check the install thread here:
https://yabb.jriver.com/interact/index.php/topic,137688.0.html
And the link to the wiki in that.
There are several things under System Preferences -> Security & Privacy that MC needs to run.
It should ask on first run. Otherwise check to make sure those are enabled.

Many thanks for a quick reply. I had tried checking all the permissions as per various threads to no avail. Just had another look at the Mac Installation and removal link and have tried deleting the Media Center 31 folder. I then clicked on the MC31 icon in launcher and the programme ran showing the licencing page, rather than risk losing another restore I clicked continue for trial and lo and behold the programme is running (it didn't ask for any permissions although they seem to have been selected in Mac settings) and I was able to restore my MC30 library.

Currently playing music so all seems OK but is it safe to use another restore to licence or should I wait a while? I already used a few restores a month or so ago in my attempts to get the programme running.

I'm hoping the same procedure will get MC 31 working on my Mac mini which feeds into the hifi.

Use a restore. It's always easier to simply copy/paste the code into MC using Help->registration info
It sounds like your settings files must have been corrupted and when you cleared them out it starts fresh.

In this latest update, DSD playback (at any sample rate) seems to be broken.  I can go back to an older build of MC 29 (29.0.87) and play any of my DSD files just fine, bitstreaming perfectly to my Burson Conductor 3x Reference DAC/AMP.  I'm running Mac OS Monterey 12.7.1 on a Mac Mini w/ Mac M1 Silicon (2020).

It's connected how?
Is bitstreaming enabled in MC's audio settings?

Connected via USB, Yes bitstreaming is enabled in MC's audio settings. Please see attached screenshots for details.  When attempting to bitstream DSD files in this current MC 31 version (31.0.83), my DAC switches to 176k PCM (DSD64(1x)), or 352k PCM (DSD128(2x)) sampling rates, depending on the file.  No audio comes through my DAC/AMP, just some low-volume clicks when attempting to play these DSD files.

What are your DSP studio settings? Output format should be disabled.

It's acting like it's attempting DoP, as if I have it set up that way, but I do not.  I have successfully played DSD files in the past where my DAC switches into DSD playback mode.  My settings are the same in my older MC 29 version, and it is playing my DSD just fine.

MacOS can only play DoP, it can't do native DSD.
DoP is just a container. It should still show up on the DAC as DSD.

Ok, good to know and understood.  Yes, I've been successfully bitstreaming my DSD files via MC 29 & 31 and having my DAC play them accordingly at DSD64 (2.8MHz) to DSD256 (11MHz) with no problems.  I installed this latest update and for some reason the playback is not working properly now.  I just wanted to report this issue for further investigation, as this latest update is the only variable that has changed my (otherwise successful) playback scenario with DSD files up until this point.

Generally on macOS, both internal and system volume should be set to 100% or else DSD playback can fail with some DACs. In addition with some DACs you'd need to go into the Audio MIDI Setup app in macOS and set the output to the highest sample rate for your DAC.

If that still doesn't work, you may need to downgrade MC31 and find the last build it worked for you.

I've had "disabled volume" checked the whole time between MC 29 & 31, as I use my DAC for direct hardware volume control.  Upon noticing the "broken" DSD playback in 31.0.83, I did attempt to set my highest sample rate for my DAC, but that didn't change anything.

I Just downgraded to 31.0.71, and It's playing my DSD files successfully once again.  Upon playing my files successfully w/ 31.0.71, I played with the volume options to try to "break" my DSD playback, but nothing happened (w/ internal volume control, as well as checking the "enable volume when bitstreaming" option).

In 31.0.77 there's this change...

Quote
21. Fixed: Local playback of DSD tracks will not attempt to invoke integer mode.

Maybe try enabling integer mode (or disabling it if it's already enabled) in MC's Options > Audio > Audio device...

Re-installed 31.0.83, enabled integer mode (it was NOT already enabled), and still the same issue remains (file playback starts w/no audio, playback timer still counts through file as if playing normally, light clicking noise, DAC sample rate switched to 176k PCM mode for DSD64 file instead of DSD mode @ 2.8MHz.

Just did a bunch of testing and it seems OK. My issue was with non-standard buffer sizes and hardware buffering period.
Set them back to defaults if they are not and try again.
Otherwise turn on logging and post a log of just the beginning of trying to play a track.

Thanks for testing.  I had software buffer size set to default, but hardware buffering set to maximum. I reset the hardware setting to default, and restarted MC 31 (v83) - PLAYBACK SUCCESS!  Thanks so much for your attention to this issue!

Sending commands too quickly to MCWS can cause MC to hang w/a spinning beach ball.

http://127.0.0.1:52199/MCWS/v1/Library/Load?Library=0
http://127.0.0.1:52199/MCWS/v1/UserInterface/Show?View=Audio

It kills the MCWS server:

The issue is that you are trying to get a view while the library is switching. The Media Network needs to shutdown and that takes a finite amount of time.
You should delay at least 10 seconds before trying to get the view.

We will add a error return in MC32 when a MCWS tries to run during a database switch.
<Response Status="Failure" Information="Function 'UserInterface/Show' not able to run."/>

Might it be better to make these long-lasting or large state-transition MCWS calls blocking?   MC isn't properly staging these commands to prevent the possibility of these kinds of problems.  There's no value in returning before the command's results are achieved.  It's just inviting trouble.
