JRemote connection via Access Key vs Local credential
« on: November 20, 2023, 12:33:04 pm »

Hi:

I have locked down internet access to the PC that is running MC 27; that PC is doing nothing but just running MC 27 with local music files and I wish to secure it from online threats.

However, now the JRemote is taking full 15 seconds to connect to MC 27. If I give the internet access to PC running MC 27, it just takes 1 second for JRemote to connect. Why JRemote is taking so long to connect on LAN via Username and Password authentication.

Someone please guide me and help me fix it.

Use the IP address instead of the Access Key.

Use the IP address instead of the Access Key.

Hi Jim:

Thank you so much. I tried that, however, it still takes exactly 15 seconds.

The MC 27 is running on Windows 7
The server has a Static IP address
Windows Firewall is disabled.
JRemote is using Server Name, Local IP address, Port 52199, Username, Password...all other fields are empty.

Thanks Jim!

However, I am not sure if I was clear in explaining the problem I am facing. I am using already IP Address Method, it works and I understand it. However,

JRemote takes full 15 seconds to connect to MC 27 via IP Address Method and just 1 second via Access Key Method. I suspect somewhere in code, Access Key Method has been given propriety and MC 27 only reverts to IP Address Method after it has been timed out on Access Key Method.

Can some other users also confirm this behavior?

Local IP method works instantly here in JRemote2, MO 4Media, Panel and MC in TRemote mode, if there's a delay I'd be looking at a potential issue with a firewall, port forwarding, networking, etc.

Even the access key method works pretty quickly here (when on Wi-Fi) connecting within a second or two.

Does MC27 try to do a reverse DNS lookup on a connecting client? Or try to reach some other internet service on connection?

Thank you so much. Can you please take a look at screens shots that I have posted to see if I am doing something wrong. Otherwise, Windows Firewall is disabled, MC 27 is running on Windows 7, the server has a Static IP address, JRemote is using Server Name, Local IP address, Port 52199, Username, Password...all other fields are empty.

The settings in your screenshots look fine, so if I had to guess the issue would be somewhere in your networking, e.g. with the router or something like that. It could also be something to do with the device running the MC server too.

In my case I'm running a pretty good Wi-Fi 6E tri-band router (with MC's port forwarded in the router) and 1GB ethernet to the main devices I have. Examples using the 1GB ethernet being my NAS that's my storage for media and my Orange Pi 5B that's my MC server and I experience no issues with multiple devices. From there connecting with devices via the local IP address is instant, and access via access key is about a second with both using Wi-Fi.

BTW you shouldn't disable Windows Firewall - in fact, I don't think you can fully in Windows 10 or 11, and it's kinda futile to be disabling Windows features like the firewall and Defender, as doing so can cause all kinds of unforeseen issues. Better off leaving them enabled and taming them.

Thanks for helping me. I am using MC 27 on Windows 7. It is a dedicated wav file server only and thus for protection I have disabled internet access to it and therefore Windows 7's firewall was not needed. If I enable internet and use Access Key method, JRemote instantenously connect to MC 27. This is what is confusing me, that why JRemote has instant connection via internet-Access Key method but takes full 15 seconds via Local credentials.
