« on: February 13, 2003, 01:11:36 pm »

Media Center 9.0.112 beta is available.

Changes

1. Fixed: Playing Now wouldn't always re-slave display after returning from full screen.
2. Fixed: Some packages (skins and plugins) wouldn't install correctly.
3. Fixed: Video playback would not advance to the next track always.
4. Fixed: MC would not skip filtered tracks properly.
5. Fixed: Full screen video playback would start in Hairstyle.
6. Changed: Double-clicking outside a button in Hairstyle will return to MEGA-ME.
7. Fixed: Toolbar customization did not work on Win9x / ME systems. (Media Jukebox, Media Editor, Media Labeler)
8. Fixed: Media Editor's toolbar and menus would crashes under several circumstances.
9. Fixed: After CD burning, CD would not be accessible until MC was closed down.
10. Fixed: Canceling a CD burning operation would sometimes cause a crash.
11. Changed: Windows Media input and encoding upgraded to version 9.

I got the following error when the installer got to the "installing plug-in 'Windows Media Encoder'":

Failed to install package.

More info: failed to register object.
c:\program files\j river\media jukebox\plugins\enc_wma.dll

And then, after hitting okay:

Cannot load plug-in.

Ditto that  :-[

Another thing... I noticed this build is almost 2 megs bigger than previous ones.... what's new? Does it have anything to do with the Windows Media Configuration Utility that ran while installing MC? This is new.... it hasn't ran before. What is it?

The 2MB extra is thanks to Microsoft.  They've bundled the redistributable software all into one piece so we have to provide it all.  We plan to split it off in a few builds and treat it much like a plug-in -- you'll download it only when or if you need it.

The other problem you have is probably related.  We'll get it fixed tomorrow.

I got the same message during installation, and so I can't play files .wma. This will be fixed in coming build?

This is an unneeded step if you are ripping from MC in the first place. Why do you have to update the tags if MC is supposed to be creating them?

If you turn off tagging in options, MC won't tag -- ever.

There's no real reason to do that though.

Matt-

There are real reasons for this when you do something boneheaded and click a wrong button for example. With tagging off it will not do the errant click without telling you to check it (automatically update tags) in options. C.Y.A. like that part of not having the tagging turned on.

However, that aside, if the files are being ripped internally from MC with the option to tag to id3 from the input plugin. MC should be smart enough to allow it in this instance. Why? MC has been instructed in this case to tag.

Obviously we won't see eye to eye on this point. It's just my opinion.

At this point I am still not comfortable with the way MC tags files that have been painstakingly corrected and ripped with something else. Having just deleted several thousand files and starting from scratch, I'd just as soon let MC be a read only program and not update anything. With the exception noted above.

ps-thanks for the reply.

Well, I finally looked and noticed that the Audio Analyzer no longer has a memory leak.  Nice.

But, now, I noticed that, while analyzing, most of the songs I was playing at the same time did not get logged as being played.  I listened to about 30 tracks and only a tenth of them show being played within the last hour.

I don't know why some of them seem to log as played, but most don't, that's all I know.

Also, another thing I've noticed is that it likes to guess what I'm going to fill in when editing a file's properties.  But, it's a bit annoying for the song title section, where I have to wait for the system to catch up.  It seems that it can only enter song titles at 10wpm, which is probably due to the almost 4,000 song titles I do have in my library.

Otherwise, MC is looking greater with each build!

CD Labeler Bugs

There are several issues with CD Labeler recognizing internal artwork.  In the following example, I've sent "Oscar Peterson - Soul Espanol" to the CD Labeler.  CD Info correctly displays the album titles and track names.

However, when I click Front Cover, instead of "Soul Espanol" CD Labeler displays "Andre Previn - After Hours."

Clicking on CD Label brings up an error message stating "Error: Can't open graphic file C:\Program Files\JRiver\Media Jukebox\Data\Cover Art\Chicago Movie Soundtrack Cast - Chicago.jpeg"

Clicking the Ok button fails to close the box, although this behavior is not consistent.  When It doesn't close the box, dragging the box creates a duplicate copy of it, which can be closed.

Now that the serious problems are being dealt with, I need to bring up a merely annoying one: my download manager doesn't work and hasn't for several builds. It reports "Bad Request" or some other "Ain't gonna do it" type of message. I had to install Emusic's download manager and we remember from the big test a few months ago that it's not quite satifactory.

Hmmmm.... thought the Audio Analyzer was the problem... but I now notice that it hasn't changed since I stopped the Analyzer.  Guess I need a new theory.

Is there a problem with keeping track of last played in this release (or the past couple)?

Or, do I need to reinstall?

Matt, FYI. With this build and the new M - Audio Revolution 7.1 drivers (ASIO), this player and sound card, sound from incredible to a dream!. I am using only Eq and Output format (No effects, No overflow handling, no replaygain),  I am resampling to 32bit / 192hz. Mpc only!. WAO!. that's all I can say. You should consider selling away your audigy2 and get one of these babies.  ;D

New bug in build 112.

When playing any single song, the end is always clipped by a few seconds. However, those same songs when in a playlist and followed by any other song complete properly.

MC fails to list individual artists when burning a compilation playlist to a CD. It only lists artist for each song as "Various." Have any others reported this problem which goes back a long way?

Since build 109 I've had a major problem ripping cds.  Prior to build 109, cpu utilization on my system was never above 42% and I could quite easily multitask with no side affects.  Now, since build 109, cpu utilization rises to 100% and stays there.  Not only that, but I get stutter effects on any sound the system attempts to play back (ie. typical windoze sound effects).

Secondly, I used to be able to reach a peak ripping speed of 20x with my cdrw - since build 109,  the max speed it 7.8x, but it usually sticks around 6x.

Are there any new configurations that I'm missing?

I've not changed hardware or drivers since everything was happy.

Any one else have this?  Ripping/encoding mp3s.

9. Fixed: After CD burning, CD would not be accessible until MC was closed down.

Nope...still not fixed...  :(

Bugs:
1. After a burn finished, MC empties the burn list (in content view) but leaves the folder names in the Org Tree...data CD burn.
2. Old bug not fixed...trying to burn a data CD with a track that is currently playing doesn't burn the track...no error now...just a zero-length track is burned (no data).

Request/Plea:
Put the options and support back to use the old burner drivers (Goldenhawk and Generic)...I'm not sure this new 'internal' burner is ever going to pan out (my opinion of course...locking access to my CD-Rom drives everytime I burn is getting very, very annoying).

  • New: The YADB track lookup will only work in small batches.  I just tried a batch of 14 track from "Neko Case" "Blacklisted" and got the last 4 tracks only.  Had to go back and do 4 at a time to get them all.
  • New: Converter won't convert to UNC destination directory.  Says "Failed" for each track but updates the Filename property as though it had completed.

  • Data CD writes on my Sony drive fail with "Can't start the write.", "Failed: Open session. Invalid field in parameter list".  Data CD writes to the TDK drive work fine.  The drive is on its way to JohnT.
  • "Decode files directly to CD" is both on the main CD writer settings page and the settings sub-page but the checkboxes aren't synchronized.
  • Now that you can get past the "Invalid Media Server Information" message box when searching for media servers, I still get multiple duplicate replies from the server if either the server or client have multiple network interfaces.
  • When the media server responds to a search, it responds with the first interface it's bound to even if that interface isn't reachable by the client that issued the search request.   My server has 2 interfaces, one private, one public.  My laptop is on the public network.  I issue a search from the laptop and the server responds with the name and ip address of the private interface which the laptop can never reach.  Combined with the previous problem, I can get 4 responses for the private interface, all useless.
  • If the client actually gets only 1 response, it tries to connect immediately.  It should problably give you an option to see the response and confirm that you want to connect to it.
  • If you cancel out of the list box with the responses you get a "failed to connect" message and you get dumped into the default library instead of the library you were originally connected to.
  • Column widths aren't saving again.  You have to drag the column separator twice to get the first change to stick.
  • When "Decode directly to CD" is unchecked, and you burn more than 1 CD, the raw temp file is deleted and recreated for each CD instead of using the one created at the start of the first burn.
  • In "File Naming and Location" you can't enter paths with leading or trailing periods.  I.E.  If I try to enter a path for track images like "m:\.coverart" the period gets stripped out as soon as I move the cursor out of the entry field. Any valid file system path should be allowed.
  • Can't turn off tooltips for the drop target and player controls.
  • MP3 Encoder settings are broken again.  If you select "custom" and press advanced, you get the quality selection dialog instead of the custom command line dialog.
  • Analyze audio during rip doesn't do anything.
  • When collapsing "Auto Smartlists (audio)" after selecting one of the random or favorite lists, the app hangs for about 10 seconds while spinning the cpu at 100%. (maybe not a "problem", but it's still a pain)
  • Ripping in digital secure mode hangs near the end of the last audio track if there is also a data track on the cd.  Have to cancel, wait for everything to release, then rip the last track in digital large buffer mode.

At this point I am still not comfortable with the way MC tags files that have been painstakingly corrected and ripped with something else. Having just deleted several thousand files and starting from scratch, I'd just as soon let MC be a read only program and not update anything. With the exception noted above. Obviously we won't see eye to eye on this point. It's just my opinion.

It seems that this can be easily resolved by having an option to control the program's behavior. There are so many customers, with so many styles and viewpoints, that it is impossible to meet everyone's needs without lots of configurable options. A checkbox defaulting to the non-verified behavior accomodates everyone's application of MC.

Personally, I request an option for double-clicking a tree entry with children. MJ8 and virtually all software expands a tree item in response to a double-click. MC9's behavior has changed since MJ8 and now starts playing the songs within the category. MJ8 only played the contents when the tree item had no children (typically, an Album). Since my style of use in trees is consistently "double-click to see children" in all programs, I constantly get surprised when MC9 starts a new set of music... interrupting what I was listening to and making me rebuild it and start it where it was. I earnestly request this option - and hope that, since it will prevent many customer service calls from MJ8 upgraders, it will be seen as a Good Thing To Do.

Fix: As of .111, I can now convert APE files to MP3 without a pop at the beginning. Please let JohnT know I've verified it on my system with the files I sent him, and ~120 more. Thanks.

KingSparta,

Can you connect to Media Server with new version of Media Center? It looks like low timeout value was causing connection to fail, so we increased it from 10 sec to 30 sec.

Thanks out to Jim, Matt, Nikolay, Yaobing, Steve and everyone else on the MC Dev Crew for their continued hard work.  Much respek, once again.

I would hereby like to offer to have Steve buy you all a beer this weekend.  ;D ;D

Here's a weird one...

Load a playlist and start it playing.  Press pause.  Press next...

Look at the song that playing now claims is playing.  Listen to the song that is playing.  Notice that they don't match.  Pressing next again will sync things up, but a song in the playlist will have been skipped.

Also, I started a new thread on this, but does YADB use something other than HTTP for its lookup?  I'm going through a cable modem router and all I can get is  connection failed messages.

Yup, same here. Also....
If I have scrollbars in any of the panes, moving the mouse inside the pane and scrolling the wheel does nothing until I click inside the pane. Then, when moving to another pane and scrolling (without clicking) the previously clicked in pane is the one that scrolls.
This is a little irritating. It would be nice for the pane the mouse is currently in to scroll without needing to click inside the pane 1st.

My WMA plugin also failed, but I refused it internet access during install. Could that be why it failed?
Where on the net is it calling and why?

"Analyse Audio" is still returning 100% peak level value for all files.

Have installed 9.0.112,  Windows Media installed fine but now when I rip with WMA I a have  a small dialog box with a number from 0 to 6 and  OK button. This box appears 7 times for every track.

Customize toolbar appears to be fixed.  Thanks Charlamagne  for posting it--it appears that your post is what finally got it fixed.

Now, if I could just burn a data CD....It was recommended that I turn the autoinsert for the drive off (if it's not off already)--can anyone help me with this?  How do I turn the setting off--through MC9, or are there drive settings somewhere on my system  (If so, how do I access them?)?

Thanks in advance.

1)The playlist scrol bar does not scroll in Min-Me skins.

2)Clicking a *.rm link downloads the file instead of streaming it.  If I cut and paste the link in to "Open URL of streaming file" dialog box, the file streams fine.

Clicking on a *.ram link does nothing.  Again, if I cut and paste it into "Open URL of streaming file" dialog box, the file streams fine.

BOTH file types are registered under MC9 in IE Folder options.

3) Noise, with Replay Gain enabled, in songs that are recorded at HIGHER volume than playlist average.  Clip protection is enabled.  Restarting the song usually eliminates the problem.

Cover Art Bugs:
  • If more than one track is selected that has the SAME cover art, the properties window does not show the cover art for all of them.  I think this should be changed so that if a cover art is DIFFERENT on one of the tracks THEN it won't show it, but if it's the same it should. (Hope that makes sense.)

  • No scrollbar in the "Add..." cover art dialog using the Z skin.  I can select a track and use the arrow keys to scroll through the list.  If I disable skins the scroll bar shows up.

  • I have a problem with one of my cover art pictures...  No matter what I do, MC will NOT display it!  Properties dialog says it's inside the file but it won't display.  Any ideas?  It doesn't appear to be much different than the other cover art that I have, except it's IS a little bigger (300k).

Request\Question:

  • Once all the big things are out of the way, is the Cover Art finder going to be reviewed?  As it stands, it doesn't work very often for me so I have to go to cover sites to d-load them.  Just curious...

Trying to rip a CD
Read Track Failed. Unknown Error = 1
Trying to reach YABD lookup

Trying to reach Interact from the start page
Cannot find Default_V9.zip

Could this be the cause of the YABD failure?

Still sound from both rear and front channels when trying to route the direct sound output. It is not related to any DSP setting, I have tried without them all.  8)

I am unable to get ASIO output to work at all with my Echo Indigo PCMCIA soundcard. I switch the playback to ASIO and MC sees the card as ASIO Echo WDM, but when I press play it just sits there saying "Buffering...". When I hit stop, MC crashes and always produces a dialog box that says:

There was an error starting playback.

Make sure that your system has a valid sound playback device and that it is properly configured in Media Jukebox playback options.

(double check the output mode, output device, and output bitdepth)

Wave out and DirectSound work just fine. I don't have DSP or any other effects turned on.

- When sending e.g. 5 mp3's to external tool MP3Gain, it opens 5 times MP3Gain i.s.o. Adding those 5 files to 1 MP3Gain and those 5 MP3Gain instances have all the same file in it.

- When deleting a file with shift from Playing now when a song is playing, the focus of the currently playing song is gone

Bug: Rotate (lossless)

A while ago people were posting problems with JPG image rotation. I posted a successful report. In fact, the problem remains and is related to the image itself.

Most of my images will rotate. Several will not. Here is one that won't:

Please, please, please fix the problem with MC losing file associations.  I am constantly having to go into the scheduler and reselect them all (except for bmp, gif, and the jpegs, which I don't want MC to touch).  Sometimes they all disappear and other times, only some of the RealAudio associations disappear.  This has been going on for many builds now.

Since the changes were made to the Playing Now Slaving it seems to be a lot slower to go into full screen and back to the internal window.  Im talking like about 3 secs as opposed to about 0.5 before...

File Properties issues

With MJ8, I was constantly impressed with the speed and efficiency I could modify tags. This new method in MC9 just isn't working as well.

1. If I'm editing a field and hit PageDown, the same field for the new file is not open for edit. If I hit Tab, it goes to the Album. So I have to click the field each time I change files. Very awkward - a big step backward from MJ8.

2. The new Properties doesn't show the whole filename - unless I've undocked it and made it really large. But then the other fields are just wasted space. In MJ8 the filename had a LONG field that almost always showed the complete path for easy identification. It overlapped the titles of the other fields because it was expected to be long. Now it's the same length as Genre, which will never be long. So I have to click the field to see the name, but then I just see the right end, and I have to use the arrow key to see it piece-by-piece. Sigh...

3. Still, after several postings from several people, if you've been looking at statistics and select File / Properties..., you're shown the Statistics Page. Very inconvenient and counter-intuitive. There really needs to be a File / Statistics... in addition to File / Properties... and each should bring up the appropriate page.

4. Alphabetical sorting of the fields is not the way our minds work. I (and others) want to see the title at the top, and have other personal preferences. Can you let the fields be ordered using drag-n-drop?

5. If I hit the hidden "drop-down arrow" in a field such as Genre, it doesn't expand (as would Access, for example). I have to click it again to see the drop-down list. Access hides the button, but if you click where it is, the drop-down shows immediately.

6. All the drop-downs are populated with ALL the contents of all file types. The Genres and Albums I use for images are totally unrelated to those I use for music. Does "Reggae" have a meaning for an image? The contents should be limited to the file type being modified.

7. I can't hit a key sequence to close the Properties "dialog" and update the fields. I have to use the mouse. Another loss of efficiency vs. MJ8. Alt+Enter would work well, and it is unallocated.

8. I can't hit Escape to cancel modifications (and close the window).

9. The pull-down for Keywords contains every permutation found in the collection. Since it is a Keyword field, I believe the pull-down should include each individual Keyword without the various combinations.

10. File / Properties shows ALL the tag fields. I don't use them all. I'd like to be able to disable a few so they don't take up screen space. If this is difficult to program, you could disable the fields whose Columns are disabled in the file view window (as a selectable option).

11. The Image File for audio content can't be modified. Why not? I've scanned some CD covers and they're much better than the downloads... but I can't hook them up to the Album/Song.

I don't know if the folks at JRiver appreciate how FINE the tag handling was in MJ8. I miss it very much. There were times that I smiled to myself in MJ8's File Properties dialog... pleased at how quickly I could edit. At times I thought "I would have bought the program just for this!"

Is there a real reason for the change? I don't find anything about the new style BETTER than before, and many things are worse.

PLEASE... if I'm missing something, tell me! If not... please reconsider this change. The File / Properties of MJ8 was totally excellent and I want it back. If anyone can tell me how to use the new dialog efficiently and quickly, please do! My guess is that it takes almost twice as long to edit a series of 30 files, compared to MJ8.

MC is still crashing after inserting an audio cd in the drive while MC is closed.
MC correctly opens as per the autorun setings, then fails in the YADB lookup, then crashes out.

This one's been around a very long time.
